Horticulturist expects foreign plant sweep Plants from foreign countries may be “sweeping” the U.S. dried flower and ornamental grass markets next year, according to Will Corley, a University of Georgia horticulturist who has been testing their U.S. growth potentials at the Georgia Experiment Station. “Catchfly, Feathertop and Natal (their common names) are three of the best ornamental grasses with dried flower potential that I have tested this year,” said Corley, an Agriculture Experiment Station - z I JBBBL j ROR E R Mother's Day Special! LP-Gas & Appliance Center 407 L Solomon St Griffin, Ga. 227-1430 horticulture specialist located a the Georgia Station here. “The highest yielder (of seed heads) by far has been the Catchfly grass from South Africa. This grass, which has a sticky stem, averages 200 seed heads per plant. Feathertop from England and Natal (Common) grass from Rhodesia, with its ruby-pink flower, are also potential ornamental grasses for use in the United States,” said Corley. Corley maintains plantings at three locations in Georgia, representing different climates. His plantings are at Attapulgus, Blairsville and the Georgia Station. Thus far, he has found that all the grasses do well at each location. Flowering plants which are already in the seed trade are planted as control groups. These include Straw Flowers, Bachelor’s Buttons, Yarrow and Baby’s Breath. Corley tests the foreign introductory plants for dried flower potential utilizing a simple technique. “If the seed heads adapt to drying, simply hung up-side-down, in a shady, well ventilated spot, then I feel they have good potential as dried flowers.” The horticulturist also rates the plants on days to maturity, percent of survival and plant size. He has also tested some of the flowers for tinting capacity. Seed companies interested in seed availability should contact Corley at the Georgia Station for more information.
