Underground sources reported that the prank was the student's way of reminding the ad ministration that the clock could stand a little repair work. Oldtimers on the staff stated that the ancient clock quit running "at 3:30 on a pretty spring afternoon about 15 years ago.” Consistent parent key to discipline AUGUSTA — Effective disciplining is perhaps one of of the most difficult aspects of childrearing. There are, however, some basic guidelines for parents to follow. “Disciplining a child,” says Dr. Lawrence Hartlage, a clinical psychologist at the Medical College of Georgia, “is perhaps not unlike giving a speech to somebody. You tell them what you are going to tell them, and then you tell them, and then you tell them what you just told them.” “When disciplining a She loves gambling MIAMI (AP) — Atlantic City housewife Shirley Kline, yearn ing to be a blackjack dealer, has placed a classified ad in The Miami Herald soliciting the help of reputed mobster Meyer Lansky of Miami Beach. Her ad Tuesday gave a tele phone number and said: “MEYER L., about casinos, call S. Kline, Atlantic City ...” “We need gambling in this town,” Mrs. Kline, who identi fied herself as the wife of a cardiologist, said in an inter view. She said she owns proper ty in downtown Atlantic City that would be a perfect site for a casino, but she wouldn’t know how to operate it. “I thought he (Lansky) would know how,” she said. “If they won’t give him a permit, I’ll let him use my name. I’ve got a good name.” “All I want out of this is a job,” she added. “I’m crazy about blackjack and would love to be a dealer.” J?* * jkA 9 whb Way off bass WAY OFF BASS - How many folks does it take to play a fiddle? Here, Georgia State University music student Ron Alexander (right) gets assistance from Peter Trimmer (left), instructor in the Alexander Technique, during a recent workshop in the muscle control and relaxation method at GSU. Alexander. child," says Dr. Hartlage, the parent first needs to make it very clear to the child what is expected of him, the ranges of variation that will be tolerated within the expectancy and what will happen if these expectancies are not met and carried out. But once these limits are set,” says Dr. Hartlage, “the parent should expect the child to test them. All of us learn in the course of our lives to test limits, to find out how much the spirit of the law will bend without breaking the letter of the law. This is exactly what children do in the home and parents have to expect it,” he says. Although Dr. Hartlage feels that discipline is one area where the parent should be as consistent as possible, he points out that there are occasions when in consistency may be used to prove a point. For example, he says that it is entirely possible to allow a child to throw a tantrum when he is at home alone and to discourage this behavior very strongly when there’s company present. “Perhaps that is inconsistent,” says Dr. Hartlage, “but I think it is a good set of skills to impart to a child that what is right in one situation is not always tolerable in another.” Dr. Hartlage adds it is not always possible or desirable to be totally consistent with children. He points out that the parent must prepare the child to live in a world that is often inconsistent, and that a parent who is always careful not to be inconsistent may be preparing the child to live only in a world that is nice and orderly. “A child from such a home,” says Dr. Hartlage, “when he is confronted with in consistency as an adult, may not know how to cope with it.” Say Si lo really see Spain during visit VALDOSTA, Ga -No language textbook ever written can match study abroad in the country where the language is spoken, according to Dr. Jose B. All five programs emphasize cultural enrich ment through living in the country, as well as study with native teachers.” A special feature of the program at Valencia ia the tour of Spain, Dr. Fernandez stresses. “For 50 days we will study at the University of Valencia, and for two weeks we will tour the cities of Spain to study the culture of the country,” he said. “We will visit Madrid, the capital, where we will tour the Prado, where many of the art treasures of the world are stored, and Toledo, which has one of the three most beautiful cathedrals in Spain, as well as many of the works of El Greco at his home, “In the south of Spain, we will explore the Moorish civilization in Cordoba, where the largest mosque in the world is located. And we will see the Alhambra in Granada, one of the oldest cathedrals in the world in Salamanca, the Roman aquaduct at Segovea, as well as El Escorial, the famous palace of Phillip II.” Dr. Fernandez stressed the trip is not only for un dergraduates and graduate students but also “for teachers who want to make credits for their teacher certificates,” and it gives 15 undergraduate credits, 10 graduate credits and 10 credits toward teacher certification. “We leave June 14 and return Aug. 19,” Dr. Fer nandez said. “From Atlanta, we fly to New York and on to Madrid.” Frosting on the travel cake will be two days in Paris. “And we’re going to ’see it all’ in those two days,” he grinned. The cost is $1,400, all in clusive. Those who wish to register or who need further details may contact Dr. Fernandee at Valdosta State College, Valdosta, GA 31601, or the Director, USGStudies Abroad Program, Georgia State University, University Plaza, Atlanta, GA 30303.
