Page 8 i — Griffin Daily News Thursday, May 5,1977 Wholesale prices soar By ROBERT A. DOBKIN Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Wholesale prices, an indicator of prices consumers eventually pay, soared 1.1 per cent in April, the third big monthly increase in a row, the government reported today. The April increase, which matched the March rise in wholseale prices and followed a jump of nine-tenths of a per cent in February, adds to worries of accelerating inflation. The March increase had been the biggest monthly jump in whoisale prices since October 1975. Government economists had expected the April jump be cause farm prices have been rising at a rate of better than 1 per cent for the past five months. In April, prices for farm products increased 3.4 per cent, the biggest jump in a year, while prices for processed foods and feeds climbed 2.5 per cent. Not all the news was bad as the increase in prices for indus trial commodities eased slightly last month. These prices rose six-tenths of a per cent in April, following an eight-tenths increase in March. Economists look to prices of industrial goods as a truer measure of underlying in flationary trends. Much of the recent increase in farm and food prices has resulted from the winter weather’s effects on crops and shipments, and econ omists expect these prices to begin moderating with the new harvests. Price trends at the wholesale level are eventually passed along to the consumer, at least in part, since they represent higher costs to businesses that produce the goods consumers buy. Consumers are already feeling the effects of higher prices at supermarket counters, where the index for consumer foods — those ready for sale on grocery shelves — rose 2.5 per cent at the wholesale level last month. The 1.1 per cent April in crease in wholesale prices, if continued for a 12-month period, would result in an over-all increase of 13 per cent for the year marking a return to the double-digit range for inflation that the nation experienced in 1974. Consumer prices that year rose 12.2 per cent. Consumer prices last year rose 4.8 per cent. Over the past twelve months wholesale prices have in creased 7.2 per cent. The big increases in whole sale prices this year have been matched by large increases in consumer prices, which have risen at a 10 per cent annual rate during the first quarter. The wholesale price index stood in March at 194.3, mean ing that goods priced at SIOO at wholesale in 1967 cost $194.30 last month. In addition to higher prices for coffee, there were sharp in creases last month in live poultry, eggs, milk, wheat and livestock. Prices declined for cocoa beans and fresh fruits and vegetables. Among industrial goods, prices accelerated for chem icals, pulp and paper. Metals and transportation equipment also increased in price but less than in March. Declines were reported for lumber and wood products. Alaska lands hearings set FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) A House interior subcommittee on Alaska lands takes hearings on an issue of vital importance to the 49th state on the road Sat urday. (AP) D-2 refers to a section of the Alaska Native Claims Settle ment Act of 1971 under which millions of acres of federally owned lands in Alaska would be included in national parks, for ests, wildlife refuges and wild and scenic river areas. After a series of hearings in Washington, D. C., the first stop on the road for the sub committee is Chicago, on Satur day. Other hearings are scheduled by the subcommittee at Atlanta on May 14, at Denver on June 4, at San Francisco on June 18, at Seattle on June 20 and in Alaska during July and August. While a number of d-2 pro posals have been advanced, conservationists generally sup port a bill introduced by Rep. Morris K. Udall, D-Ariz., which would withdraw 114.7 million acres for national parks, for ests, refuges and scenic river areas. Under the proposal by Udall, chairman of the House Interior Committee, the lands with drawn would be closed imme diately to all development. That has drawn criticism from those who believe that it would be wrong to create “in stant wildernesses,” that there should be provisions for the di versified use of land set aside primarily for its scenic and recreational values. > Great For Mother’s Day \ HAND ENGRAVED CROSSES by z?n .
