Mental health
Pike Commissioners to hold
hearing on local mental health
The Pike County Board of
Commissioners will hold a
hearing on May 25, in the
courtroom of the Pike County
Courthouse, at 10:00 a.m.
The purpose of this hearing
will be to determine whether the
citizens of Pike County desire to
have their mental health
services changed from Upson
County to the Griffin Georgia
Mental Health Department.
This change reportedly would

provide the citizens of Pike
County significant increases in
services with assurance that
such services will always be
available. This change would
necessitate an increase of
$3,500 in local tax effort.
Therefore, this hearing will be
held to determine whether the
citizens of Pike County desire
these increased mental health
services at the above stated
price.
Mrs. Marie Merk, director of
Area Mental Health Services;
Mr. Jim Crayton, Pike County
Board of Education and Mr. Al
Milby, director of Family and
Children Services will testify
before the commissioners
regarding statistical needs for
mental health in this county.
Any interested person may
appear at this hearing as an
observer as well as a
participant. This means that
everyone will have an
opportunity to express his
feelings on this matter.
Self employed
Between 1948 and 1975 the
number of self-employed work
ers in the nation’s work force
dropped from 19 per cent to
only nine per cent. The biggest
drop in self employment was in
agriculture.
Pet Report
The Spalding County Animal
Shelter reported it is holding the
following dogs for adoption or
reclaim:
BIRD DOG—TYPE, one
male bird dog, Brittany spaniel.
SHEPHERD-TYPE, one
German shepherd female, tan
and black, found in the Vaughn
road area and one mixed breed
shepherd and collie, brown,
male, about 10-months-old.
Mental health center
to hold workshop
Staff members from the
Griffin Area Mental Health
Center will conduct a 2-day
Staff Development Workshop on
May 12 and 13 at Georgia
Southwestern College in
Americus. The project is funded
through the Division of Social
Services and the Columbus
Health Department.
Participants in the
workshop, “The Helping
Relationship," will be from
Department of Family and
Children Services and Mental
Health-Mental Retardation
agencies in 16 southwestern
Georgia counties. Personnel
from the Division of Social
Services and Division of Mental
Health-Mental Retardation in
the Georgia Department of
Human Resources will also be
in attendance.
The Workshop is designed to
provide basic information and
teach specific skills which will
help clients make healthy
changes in their lives,
according to Bob Dixon,
workshop leader and
coordinator of Mental Health
Outreach services for the
Griffin Area. Dixon will be

Church
changes
name
The Good Shepherd Baptist
Church, located at 534 Mclntosh
road, has changed its name to
The Baptist Cathedral. The
change is effective
immediately.
Services at the church are
held each Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
The Rev. Bennie R. Wimbush
is pastor. The public is invited
to attend services.
