ocarbons released from billions
of cans of deodorants, pesti
cides, hair spray and air fresh
eners cease their adverse effect
on the earth’s ozone layer, says
the commissioner of the Food
and Drug Administration.

The ban, which would drive
the aerosol sprays from the
market in less than two years, is
necessary because the fluor
ocarbons damage the earth’s
ozone layer, a high altitude lay
er of air that protects living
things on the earth from poten
tially damaging ultraviolet rays
from the sun.

should wait for further study
before we act,” said FDA Com
missioner David Kennedy,
whose agency regulates about
85 per cent of the affected prod
ucts.
But he said it would be dan
gerous to wait because even if
all fluorocarbon emissions were
halted at once, those “already
in the atmosphere would contin
ue to eat away at the ozone lay-

Blake and Brenda Cobb tried to
get married in a church. But no
minister was available, so they
went to a funeral parlor and
found one.

eliminate nearly 700 million
pressurized containers now
used to spray everything from
deodorants to paint.
A handful of products would
be classified as essential and
exempted from the ban, in
cluding contraceptive vaginal
foams, asthma Inhalers and cy
tology fixatives used in cancer
diagnosis.
Anna Stinson, wife of the fu
neral home owner, said she was
pleased by the impromptu
ceremony Tuesday.
“You get to see lots of un
happiness in funeral homes.
This was a happy occasion for a
change.” She said it was the
first marriage to be performed
at the parlor.
The owners gave the new
lyweds a gift certificate for a

Webb has been studying sleep
patterns since 1960 and said his
research indicates each individ
ual has a body clock that deter
mines how much sleep is
enough.
Most of Webb’s research Is
sponsored by the National
Aeronautics and Space Admin
istration, which asked him to
investigate potential sleep
problems for astronauts on long
space flights.
The research is conducted by
isolating volunteers up to three
weeks in a soundproof, window
less sleep laboratory. All sense
of measured time is eliminated.
Their schedules are con
trolled by researchers, who as
sign tasks outside normal work
hours and monitor heart rate,
pulse and other vital signs dur
ing sleep.
“We found that there is a bio
logical rhythm and our subjects
tended to sleep about the same
amount they do in the normal
day-night social environment,"

Webb said that sleeping dis
orders develop most often when
a person tries to force changes
in the normal sleeping pattern.
“Insomnia is like saying
you’ve got a temperature,” he
explained. “It results from a
vast number of circumstances
and it could mean you’re de
manding that your body sleep
when it’s not ready.
“The thing to remember is
that the need for sleep takes
care of itself. Nobody ever died
of a lack of sleep.”
