Brazilian coffee production up WASHINGTON (AP) - Bra zilian coffee production will im prove this year, but this will have no immediate effect on steadily rising coffee prices in the United States, the Agricul ture Department says. Retail coffee prices in the United States have tripled since a 1975 frost cut into the Brazil ian coffee crop. Prices have risen to well over $3 a pound in most areas. Retail prices still lag behind wholesale levels, which are near $5 a pound. U.S. domestic prices for at least the next six months should be determined by the amount processors pay now on the world market. The effect after that would probably depend on whether the Age 10 — Matthew Quick, Derrick Favors, Steve Goins. Age 9 — Ken Evans. (AP)— Congress “now realizes it faces a major consumer issue” in the Federal Communications Com mission’s program to introduce so-called competition in tele communications service, an In dependent Telephone Associ ation meeting was told Thurs day. J. Philip Bigley, First Vice President of the U.S. Independ ent Telephone Association, spoke at the Southeastern Tele phone Showcase at the Bir mingham-Jefferson Civic Cen ter. He is president of the Vi roqua, Wis., Telephone Co. House and Senate commu nications subcommittees are both reviewing FCC policies which would permit customers to provide their own phone Gator escapees captured AURORA, Ohio (AP) - The last alligator eased himself out of the water of the 50-acre Geauga Lake and settled down to sun himself. Brazilian government lowers its export tax — which determines the world market price of Brazilian coffee. The department said Wednes day it was basing its prediction of a better Brazilian coffee crop on a visit by several experts to coffee production zones in the Latin American country. Officials said the coffee crop is expected to move closer to the levels that existed before the 1975 frost. But they cautioned that coffee production in Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, will not return to prefrost levels until the 1978-79 crop year. Worker falls TOCCOA, Ga. (AP) - A South Carolina man working on a railroad trestle feU 160 feet to his death Wednesday, Stephens County authorities said. The victim was identified as J.W. Marbley, 38, of Union County, S.C. He was an employe of the Southern Railroad. Document is not final draft of Declaration of Independence BOSTON (AP) — A document found in a Boston attic and thought to be the long lost final draft of the Declaration of In dependence quill-penned by Thomas Jefferson is instead an 1829 steel engraving. The verdict comes from docu ment experts, but the Rev. James Allen, who revealed the document’s existence last De cember, says he still believes he has the last draft. The Rev. Mr. Allen had pre sented the document — which he believed was half of the dec laration’s final draft — as a Bi centennial gift to the nation. He said a friend had found it in an attic and given it to him. But according to document experts, the minister’s find is actually an engraving by equipment and non-telephone companies to operate private long distance networks for the use of business firms. Legisla tion is pending in Congress call ing for a determination of public interest in these FCC decisions. Bigley noted that the tele phone industry contends it can successfully meet competition, but to do so the companies must change methods of pricing so that each type of customer will be charged according to actual costs. This means higher rates for residential and small business users, Bigley pointed out. More than 3,000 telephone ex ecutives are attending the tele communications meeting and exhibit, which is in its third and final day. that started Saturday after it was learned that three alliga tors had wandered away through a gate inadvertently left ajar. A spokesman at the amuse ment park said the escapees were kept under surveillance and “nobody was worried” about them. (AP) Charles Toppan, a Philadelphia engraver whose firm engraved the first U.S. postage stamps. “If it’s a Toppan, it’s still very valuable,” the Rev. Mr. Allen said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “But I still think it’s the original.” Since December, the minister of the historical First Parish Church in Boston’s Dorchester section has taken the document to Delaware and Philadelphia, where experts concluded it was an engraving. The Rev. Mr. Allen’s son, Herbert, a Navy doctor, said paper conservators had ex plained that a Toppan engrav ing was made by “etching out steel, overlaying it with ink and impressing it on paper, so the document really is ink and it looks like pen and ink.” The minister, whose church was founded in 1630, said his Tires and I LIL JH f l ■ more... car care 1■ Priced to Sell 1 11 Uniroyal Tiger Paw I WHITEWALL | 3 Bias ply-Polyester cord § I 574951 ft ■ Whitewall -7' / " tubeless.
