Thursday night’s telecast over an informal network of 155 television stations was the second of five programs expected to bring Nixon approximately $1 million. Nixon appeared as confident discussing world affairs in Thursday’s taped interview as he had appeared uneasy in dealing with his Watergate downfall in last week’s telecast. Nixon, the only man to resign the presidency, assessed the world leaders he met while president and called Kissinger, who became both secretary of state and national security chief, “a Court of Appeals rejected his appeal and he is serving a 10-year prison sen tence. Kidd, Jordan and Donald E. Gilbreth of Florence, Ala., were indicted by a federal grand jury last year on charges of conspiracy and interstate travel to commit bribery. The indictment says Gilbreth acted as a go-between for the other two men. Davis, named an unindicted co conspirator in the case, testified Thursday that he talked with Kidd in the veteran Milledgeville legislator’s state Capitol office in 1975 and was told, “Jimmy didn’t have anything to worry about.” “He said a couple of judges were personal friends of his and that he’d h JB n I Tw MW W „ M 3 BL M II —- 3u — H. Griffin, Ga., 30223, Friday Afternoon, May 13,1977 Ridley said the new addition was designed to serve the people of Spalding and portions of Butts, Lamar, Pike and Henry Counties for 7 years. He said now is the time to begin planning for larger facilities. He said the recent influx of new residents to the area has increased the demand for hospital bed space. If it continues, more bed space will be needed much sooner than the 7 years, he said. genius” who had to have things his way. Os the world leaders he met, Nixon said: —The late Chairman Mao Tse-tung of China had “a devilish sense of humor” and lived very simply. Despite debilitating strokes he maintained con trol over China until his death last year. —The late Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev was both brilliant and boorish, with “a terrible inferiority complex.” —Khrushchev’s successor, Leonid I. Brezhnev, is not as quick intellectually, but also is not as volatile “and in that way a much safer man to have sitting there with his finger on the (nuclear) button.” Nixon called Kissinger an emotional already talked to one of them,” Davis said. Asked what judges, Davis replied, “on the Court of Appeals.” Defense attorneys tried to discredit Davis’ testimony, one calling him “the biggest bookmaker in northern Alabama’’ and suggesting Davis participated in efforts to free Jordan only as a means to fill his own pockets with money the Jordan family con tributed to a slush fund for the case. Davis admitted to “taking a few bets on football,” but denied that he was a major bookmaker or that he intended to take the Jordans’ money. Earlier testimony indicated that Jordan’s friends and relatives, in cluding Davis, participated in raising Hospital week checkup Growing population may mean more additions; search for doctors pushed; nuclear medicine here Ridley said the expansion had provided for physical therapy and respiratory therapy areas on the first floor and had removed all patients, except continual care — intensive care and coronary care, from the first floor. He said studies were conducted before the construction and they showed a demand for more private rooms. Sixty-seven additional private rooms were provided in the addition. Ridley also said the expansion had intellectual who “likes to say outrageous things.” He said Kissinger, who likes being a celebrity, constantly feuded with William P. Rogers before succeeding him as secretary of state. After the Watergate scandal forced Nixon’s resignation, Kissinger was sometimes critical of his old boss. In a dinner conversation in Ottawa, Canada, in October 1975, for instance, he was overheard describing Nixon as an odd and artificial man. “Quite candidly,” Nixon said, “it drives my family right up the wqjl and it’s only because it bothers them, that it would bother me at all.” Besides, he went on, “after such (Continued on page eight.) $105,000 to be used for influencing the case. The bulk of the money was placed in an escrow account and later repaid to contributors, testimony showed. Another government witness Thursday, Baldwin County Probate Judge Calvin Simpson, linked Kidd to the Dalton law firm of McDonald, McDonald and McDonald which represented Jordan during his trial. Simpson testified that he delivered a package to Ernest McDonald in Atlanta at Kidd’s request and that the attorney placed it in his pocket, giving the im pression he was expecting it. Simpson said he did not see what was in the envelope but that McDonald said it was “a retainer.” Vol. 105 No. 113 provided relief in some of the old sections. There, some of the private rooms had been converted to semi private. He said it may be necessary to convert some of those rooms back to semi-private if the patient population continues to increase at the current rate. MEDICAL CENTER The administrator said he sees the Griffin-Spalding Hospital as a regional service unit and not just one for the Griffin Hotel to become home for senior citizens Plans are under way for a modern downtown home for senior citizens. Marcus Sharp, owner of the Griffin Hotel at Solomon and Eighth streets, said today a feasibility study is being conducted by federal officials to reconstruct the old landmark. Lamar Seals, former director of HUD’s southeastern region, has been engaged as consultant for the project. Mr. Seals is the new president of the Hamilton Mortgage Co. of Atlanta. Mr. Sharp said, depending on engineering plans, 60 to 70 modern efficiency units, including kitchenettes, will be available. The inside of the old building will be rebuilt, complete with new elevators. The ground floor will house eating, recreation and hobby facilities, he said. If the project is accepted by HUD, it would be operated under the Griffin Housing Authority, which in a special called meeting, passed a resolution expressing an interest in the project, subject to federal participation and financing, Sharp explained. Under federal guidelines, those eligible to live there must be more than 55 years of age and in need. “The project would provide sorely needed efficiency apartment facilities, centrally located for those folks in need, who are still personally independent and aren’t in need of medical facilities such as the Living Center and Brightmoor,” he said. Approximately sl-million in federal funds will be needed, he said. Sharp has operated the facility as a home for the retired, but said “the limited approach I have been able to afford has not been enough and I feel is inadequate.” The basic structure of the building is sound and Sharp said he would be proud to have such a facility in the Weather FORECAST FOR GRIFFIN AREA - Clear and mild tonight with lows in mid 50s. He said that with the local hospital serving as a regional facility, it would be in a position to provide more services. Also, as a regional facility, the hospital will help attract more physicians to the area. “We want to provide those services to the people of this area they are now having to go outside to receive," Ridley (Continued on page 2) community. Griffin Mayor Raymond Head also praised the plan. “There is a real need for the aged to have such a place. It puts them in walking distance of shopping areas and would be another step toward rejuvinating the downtown area,” he said. HUD engineers will start their work next week, Sharp said.
