who are visiting the United
States for the first time. Mr.
Thomas is on home leave from

Teacher faces decision
They sacrifice the act of choosing a
marriage partner and accept the
choices of their parents.
He said all parents as well as family
members do the searching for a
suitable marriage partner for the
young man or woman in the family.
The family has had the experience of
knowing the qualities of each partner
during the search and the boy or girl
will not later be worried about the
decision of choosing one quality of one
person over the qualities of another.
“Mothers choose but will not force a
selection on a child,” Ahmad said.
The child has a right to pick among
the selections.
Ahmad said should there develop any
problems in the marriage, the families
of both partners will try to help.
Ahmad does not find any fault with
the economical system in the States but
he is a little disillusioned concerning
the American large scale acceptance of
credit.
“Americans should learn patience to
save and then buy for cash,” Ahmad
said.
He feels the average American works
to pay bills. “The common man is a
machine who works to earn money to
only pay for things he does not own
himself,” Ahmad continued.
Again using sacrifice as a basis for
happiness Ahmad contrasted family
life practices in America with those of
his countryland.
He said he has observed that family
life in the States is not as strong as it is
in the east.
Ahmad said the eldest son in
Pakistan is responsible for supporting
the younger children and the family
even.
In the case of living parents, there

are, of course, varying degrees of
support but nevertheless the son is
expected to assist the family.
“We share whatever income that
comes to the family,” Ahmad
continued. “I feel happier when I see
my whole family happy,” he added.
Ahmad does not think there is a great
amount of difference in foods rather the
difference is in the way they are
cooked.
Because of religious reasons Ahmad
does not eat pork nor does he drink any
alcoholic beverages.
“Anything that changes the spirit of
the mind is not healthy,” he said.
Ahmad said modem science even has
determined the undesirable qualities of
swine, one of the forbidden animals in
his faith.
With relation to education in the
States, Ahmad feels there is little
respect for it because it is compulsory.
He said in Pakistan only students who
want to learn attend the schools. The
educational system is not free and a
mimimal amount of money is required.
If a student is poor he is awarded a
scholarship and closely supervised to
make certain he can and is doing the
work.
Ahmad said it seems a lot of times
American children are not appreciative
of the system and do not respect it.
Ahmad is looking forward to his
summer vacation during which he and
his family will make a trip to India and
Pakistan.
Upon their return to the States,
Ahmad perhaps will have made up his
mind.
Ahmad lives in Griffin with his wife,
Kishwar Nigar, 2 sons, Masood and
Mahmood, and his daughter, Saadiah
Shaheen.
Chappelle Calhoun, of Mr. and
Mrs. Wesley Calhoun of 1407

of Delta Sigma Theta sorority at
Medical College of Georgia in
Augusta.
