Hill’s Tire downed State Farm 20-8 and Pomona routed Walther buys Elkins’ car to gain place in 500 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - In 1937, a well-to-do race car driv er named Joel Thome was too slow to make the field for the Indianapolis 500. There were 35 qualifiers that year for the 33 starting positions and Thome was 35th fastest. Forty years later, a young driver named Salt Walther found himself in the same posi tion: second alternate. The steps each took to get into the starting lineup were notably similar, except that Walther apparently will be successful. Thome, who entered five cars in the 500 that year, decided he would start the race anyway. So he bought the car of the first alternate, and withdrew it, moving his car into that posi tion. Then he set about to buy out one of the 33 qualifiers in the same manner. The American Automobile Training Union and the youth choir. Jim and Joe’s defeated Kip’s 21-2, Griffin Realty edged Griffin Fence 16-15 and Bowen’s Pharmacy stopped Morris Association caught wind of it and said no to Thome’s plan. Thome contended he could do it. AAA said maybe so, but it isn’t fair. Fair or not, Thorne threatened to buy every car in the field and withdraw them all if he didn’t get his way. Finally Thome relented when AAA threatened to charge him with “conduct detrimental to the sport of auto racing,” and suspend him from AAA sanc tioned events for life. AAA is gone, and its succes sor, the U.S. Auto Club, “is not in a position to say no to some thing merely because it’s mor ally wrong. I feel Walther’s ac tion is morally wrong, in my opinion, but legally accept able,” according to a USAC of ficial. Walther failed to get either one of his two McLarens into the lineup, despite starting off Achievement program. Each of the award winners received a trophy. A large trophy with their names engraved on it will be in the trophy case at Griffin High. The families of the two recipients were at the banquet and came in when the awards were announced. He was bumped out Sunday, after finding only 184.549 m.p.h. on his quali fication run. So within less than 24 hours, Walther and his father George purchased from ailing Lee El kins the Eagle that Bill Puterbaugh qualified at 186.800 m.p.h. The selling price was re portedly $60,000, much more than the 6-year-old car is con sidered to be worth. Puterbaugh was then fired and given a check for $6,000 — forty per cent of last-place money. (That’s a standard driver percentage.) The move proved unpopular. There was a small, emotional gathering at Puterbaugh’s modest Indianapolis home.
