HEALTH I Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. Embarrassing gas problem By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. DEAR DR. LAMB - I suf fer from an overabundance of gas. I have had X rays of my digestive tract, including a barium enema and gall bladder tests. The doctor, a gastroenterologist, says it is a spastic colon. He has given me three different kinds of medicines which have not helped me at all. I am 54 years old. I don’t know what to do. I pass gas all day long. It is very annoying and embarrassing. Could you please advise me what can be done? I also have arthritis in my spine. I am wearing a surgical girdle. It is much worse when I get up in the morning. The gas and the girdle combined are quite a problem. I have never had so much gas as in the past few months. DEAR READER - A spastic colon is often part of the picture of gaseousness. Your colon is a muscular tube and the muscles constantly contract and relax in a rhythmic fashion to move food residue. When these muscles contract forcibly as a spasm it causes pain. This closes off the colon and traps any gas that is accumulating in the colon. Because of the spasm the trapped gas is under tension. That is what causes the pain. I am sending you The Health Letter number 2-1, Irritable or Spastic Colon and Constipa tion. It will give you basic in formation on what you can do to train your bowel so you won’t have so much trouble. Others who want this informa tion can send 50 cents with a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope for it. Just send your request to me in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019. You may profit by in creasing the bulk in your diet. Cereal bulk, particularly bran, is helpful. A large bowl of bran flakes each day is a good way to start. There is POLLY'S POINTERS Polly Cramer hffk 1 Sparks fly over static POLLY’S PROBLEM By Polly Cramer DEAR POLLY — Can anything be done to control static electricity? Every time I touch an electric switch, metal or another person the sparks fly. Our new fully carpeted, all electric home has a fireplace and I wonder if any of these things could cause our problem. I love the column and keep the Pointers in a loose leaf binder divided according to rooms in the house. I find this a time saver. — LAURA. DEAR LAURA — Rubbing two different materials together will cause a friction that makes static elec tricity such as walking across a carpet will do. This is not dangerous and often varies according to at mospheric conditions. Try putting more moisture in the air. This can be done by placing containers of water on radiators or heaters. — POLLY. DEAR POLLY — Does static electricity get the best of you? Try carrying a sheet of that fabric softener that one puts in the dryer in your pocket, or keep it handy when removing your nylon coat prior to hanging it in the closet. Sparks used to come out of the switch plates when I touched them and scared me nearly to death. Just rub such a sheet on your slacks or dress. This really works. — MARIAN. DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is with those amateur photographers who stand so far back that the picture shows lots and lots of background but a magnifying glass is needed to identify the people in the picture. — MRS. J.H. DEAR POLLY — I have three nice sweaters that did not have pockets that I really need. I hit on the idea of using lining material the color of the sweaters, cut it to pocket size and neatly overcast a pocket to the underside of each sweater. This works perfectly for carrying a handkerchief, tissues and other light things. — MRS. H.W.S. I NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN.) Try to stay away from chemical laxatives as they cause more harm than good and can cause you to develop a laxative habit. Gas comes from several sources. Many people swallow air. We know that because the gas has been withdrawn and analysed. Because it is mostly oxygen and nitrogen we know it comes from air. In other people fermented gases are important. These gases are hydrogen, methane and car bon dioxide. Bacterial action on undigested food is impor tant here. Good bowel habits will help relieve this problem in many cases. Intolerance to milk and milk products is a rather com mon source of gas. As people get older they often do not digest carbohydrates as well as before. You might try leav ing off milk for a while, in cluding ALL milk products used in cooking and see what happens. Coffee is also a fre quent factor. To give you more informa tion on gas problems I am also sending you The Health Letter number 6-8, Controlling Gaseousness. It is available to readers as noted about the issue on spastic colon. Almost everyone swallows air and forms some gas. The amount normally is not large and in the absence of a spastic colon it passes unnoticed by anyone. Every time you swallow liquids or food you are likely to swallow some air. The abdomen-distended average person passes between 400 and 2000 ml of gas each day. The pain that trapped gas causes may be in the area where gall bladder pain is expected. The pain may be from the colon and not the gall bladder. You may be interested to know that about one in 10 persons in the general population experience unpleasant symptoms from gas. So you are certainly not rare.
