Mr. Howell
Mr. Colvard William “Bill”
Howell of 829 East Mclntosh
road died early this morning at
Coweta General Hospital.
Mr. Howell is survived by 2
daughters, Mrs. Rita Howell
Hudson of Morrow and Mrs.
Shelia Howell Bullus of Ormond
Beach, Fla.; 2 sons, Joey
Howell of Riverdale and Chris
Howell of Jonesboro; 2 sisters,
Mrs. Christine Copper of Ellijay
and Mrs. Lowrie Brady of
Griffin; mother, Mrs. Sallie
Howell of Griffin; a brother, J.
L. Howell of Macon; six
grandchildren, several nieces
and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday
morning at 11 o’clock in the
chapel of Haisten Funeral
Home. The Rev. Brady Blalock
will officiate and burial will be
in Oak Hill cemetery. The body
will remain at the funeral home.
Mrs. Thompson
Mrs. Mary Ann Burden
Thompson of Concord died
Monday morning at Grady
Hospital in Atlanta following
several days of illness.
Mrs. Thompson was a lifelong
resident of Concord and Pike
County. She was a member of
the New Mt. Calvary Baptist
Church.
She is survived by her
husband, G. W. Thompson; a
daughter, Miss Angela
Thompson; 2 sons, Marcus
Thompson and Gregory
Thompson, all of Concord;
mother, Mrs. Theo Burden of
Concord; 2 sisters, Mrs. Louise
Fletcher of Atlanta and Miss
Willie Aim Burden of Concord; 5
brothers, William Burden,
Johnny Clarence Burden,
Bobby Ray Burden, all of
Concord, Roosevelt Burden of
Steward, Fla., and L. C. Burden
of Immokalee, Fla.; several
uncles and aunts.
Funeral plans will be
announced by Union Society
Funeral Home of Concord.

Mrs. Akin
Mrs. Alberta Imes Akin, 84, of
1500 Atlanta road, widow of Mr.
George W. Akin, Sr., died early
this morning at DeKalb General
Hospital.
She is survived by a daughter,
Mrs.. Fred B. Cooley of Toccoa;
a son, George W. Akin, Jr., of
Atlanta; a brother, George
Imes of Griffin; 2 sisters, Mrs.
Cliff Claridy and Mrs. Floyd
Vaughn, both of Griffin; four
grandchilderen and 1 great
granddaughter.
Mrs. Akin was born in
Spalding County, daughter of
the late George C. Imes, Sr.,
and the late Oma A. Keen Imes.
She was a member of the
Devotie Baptist Church.
The funeral will be
Wednesday afternoon at
4’oclock in the chapel of Haisten
Funeral Home. The Rev. Ray
Allei: will officiate and burial
will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The body will remain at the
funeral home.
Mr. Walker
The funeral for Mr. Henry C.
Walker, formerly of Concord
and Pike County will be held
Wednesday at 2 o’clock from the
Old Mt. Calvary Baptist Church
in Concord. The Rev. M. Davis
will officiate and burial will be
in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Lillian Walker of West
Palm Beach, Fla.; mother,
Mrs. Pinkie McDowell; sister,
Mrs. Marjorie Moore, both of
Griffin; 2 brothers, Earl Walker
of Atlanta and Johnny Walker of
Philadelphia, Pa.; several
aunts, uncles, nieces and
nephews.
All relatives and friends are
asked to assemble at the
residence of Mrs. Pinkie
McDowell, 411 Fourth street,
Griffin no later than 12:30 p.m.
Union Society Funeral Home is
in charge of plans.
Cleland praises state VA
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.
(AP) — The new head of the
Veterans Administration,
former Georgia legislator Max
Cleland, had nothing but praise
over the weekend for the head of
the VA program in the state.
Cleland and U.S. Sen. Sam
Nunn were in Milledgeville Sat
urday for the dedication of the
Pete Wheeler Building at the
Georgia State War Veterans

Work starts on center
Bulldozers work on grading site for construction of a juvenile detention center in Spalding
County to serve the Griffin Judicial Circuit. It will be on Williamson road near the present
Spalding County Corrections prison.

Cleland praised Wheeler, a
longtime Georgia VA official,
and the state for proceeding
with financing and construction
on the building without waiting
for federal help.
If the state had waited for that
help, the building probably
would not have been built, Cle
land said.
Nunn called Wheeler a “vet-

their country in the armed
J forces. The ceremony was con
i ducted on Armed Forces Day.
The building on the grounds of
the Central State Hospital cost
$4.1 million in state and
; federal funds and includes 288
' beds.
