Training center
covered in kudzu
MACON, Ga. (AP) - The
more than 2,000 acres of land,
now covered by kudzu, young
pines and rotting buildings, is
deserted.
But twice it was used to pre
pare men to fight and die. It
changed the history of Macon
and it may contribute to the
city’s future.
Camp Wheeler housed as
many as 60,000 young soldiers
during the first and second
world wars.
Its history dates back to Colo
nial days when the King of
England granted Harry Still
well Edwards’ ancestors 3,000
acres of land. The family grew
cotton, passing the plantation
from generation to generation.
Edwards inadvertently
brought the first Camp Wheeler
into his own backyard.
During World War I, Macon
wanted a training camp to spur
business growth. City officials
asked Edwards, a renowned
writer, to use his influence to
bring such a camp to the area.
He asked his friend Teddy
Roosevelt to help, and with the
former president’s note of in
troduction, Edwards was able
to bring the proper Army offi
cials to Macon.
The Army was thinking about
National Guard Camp Harris as
a training camp, but the general
in charge of the camps saw
Edwards’ land when invited
there for a barbecue.
Tents soon dotted the area,
housing at the start some 60,000
men. The camp was named for
Confederate Gen. Joe Wheeler.
Illness took many lives. In
1917 a measles epidemic killed
six to eight men a day. A flu
epidemic took more lives in
1918.
After the war, the camp was
torn down, buildings sold for
lumber and animals sold at
auction.
The Edwards family farmed
land scarred with abandoned
trenches and dugouts.

Three decades later, as Hitler -
marched across Europe, the -
Edwards family again was Z
asked to lease its land to the,
government.
Construction of a new camp
began in 1940. It was built to last
50 years, but lasted less than
five.
Opened in February 1941, the
new Camp Wheeler became one
of the largest replacement
training centers in the country.
Some 30,000 soldiers at a time
were trained for 13 weeks be
fore being shipped overseas.
The installation had 740 build
ings, including 10 barber shops,
a tailor shop, beauty shop, five
theaters, six chapels and 18
PXs.
Gen. Ambrose R. Emery,
Camp Wheeler’s best known
commander, called it ideal for
training. The terrain was var
ied, with clear areas and rough,
wooded regions.
The camp was a boost to Ma
con’s economy. The color of
khaki tinted its streets and
army payrolls filled the city’s
cash registers.
The 2,000 civilian employes at
the camp added an additional $1
million per month to the city’s
economy.
Camp officials boasted that
more than 200,000 men were
trained there to fight all over
the world.
After victory on two conti
nents, the camp was deacti
vated, and now some of the land
has been sold and some of it is
for sale.
The DuPont Co. owns 1,410
acres and a spokesman said it
will eventually be the site of a
major plant —a future boost to
the economy of Macon and cen
tral Georgia.
