Mrs. William Kelly, who has
lost plants to thieves four
times—pots and all, said some
of the plants would take two
persons to carry off.
“They take such unusual
plants as tuberous begonias,
snake plant or mother-in-law
tongue, Christmas cactus and
July cactus and a great big
philodendron,” she said.
The plant pilferers also have
hit at least one nursery, getting
away with nearly S6OO worth of
greenery.
CULTURAL HISTORY
NEW YORK (AP) - The Na
tional Portrait Gallery of the
Smithsonian Institution is cur
rently presenting an exhibition
of documents and photographs
covering more than a century
of American cultural history.
“Artists and Writers” illus
trates the close personal rela
tionships that existed between
such painters, sculptors and au
thors as artist Jerome Blum,
and author Sherwood Anderson,
of 19th-century sculptor Hiram
Powers and his friend, the poet
William Cullen Bryant. The ex
hibit will remain on view
through December.
Way wealthy widow lived as baffling as she died
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The
way slain heiress Marjorie
The nursery operator said
reclaiming stolen plants is hard
to do since as one person ob
served there is hardly any way
to tattoo an identification num
ber on a begonia.
Police Chief Everett Price
said he received about a dozen
reports of plant thefts in May
"and we figure there are three
unreported thefts at least for
every one that is reported.”
One Athens policeman, S. R.
Powell, said “these thefts
mount up in value. So they take
only three or four plants from a
house—that could be a hundred
dollars worth, particularly if
the plants have grown to some
size since they were bought.
“The large plants are pretty
valuable things to get away with
and so far the stealing has been
easy.”
But Powell said he is deter
mined to do something to stop
the thieves. He said he and an
other officer have worked out a
plan but are keeping it a secret.
“No use telling the thieves
what we are going to do.” he
said.

Mrs. William Kelly, who has lost plants four times to
thieves, describes her theory on the pilfering. (AP)
believed to have died.
Officials say almost $3 million
dollars of her money remains
unaccounted for and they’re not
sure they’ll ever be able to find
it.
Mrs. Jackson, 66, was found
dead after a fire in her home
here. She had been shot once.
Six people have been arrested in
connection with the slaying or
the theft of an unknown amount
of money. Police say they are
looking for more suspects.
Investigators know that the
eccentric Mrs. Jackson with
drew about $9 million from her
Indianapolis bank in early 1976.
But they also think the grocery
chain heiress might have ac
cumulated a smaller fortune in
her home, in bills that would be
impossible to trace.

Inmates
stabbed
REIDSVILLE, Ga. (AP) -
Three white convicts escaped
from their cells at the state
prison Monday and stabbed two
black inmates with spears, au
thorities said.
The two wounded prisoners,
Jimmy Tolbert, 23, and Mercer
Mallory, were treated at Tal
madge Memorial Hospital in
Augusta and released, a hospi
tal official said.
Tolbert suffered leg and
shoulder wounds and Mallory
received hand wounds from try
ing to fight off the spears, a
spokesman for the Department
of Offender Rehabilitation said.
The three white inmates es
caped from their cells in the
administrative segregation sec
tion, attached homemade
knives to broom handles, then
climbed from the first tier to the
third tier and attacked the
blacks, the spokesman said.
The spokesman said a dis
ciplinary committee will review
the incident before charges are
filed, the spokesman said.
The three were identified as
Billy Ashles, 35, serving 16
years for armed robbery from
Macon; James P. Glisson, 35,
serving 10 years from Fort Val
ley; and Grover Amerson, 35,
serving 32 years for armed rob
bery from Richmond County.
