The victim was identified as Michael Hendricks, Clayton, Ga., who had been living in the Ogden area the past nine months. Researchers studying ‘mysterious’ disease BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Researchers here are searching for the origins of a mysterious disease to which 80 per cent of the seacoast population be tween Virginia and Texas may have been exposed Virginia Tech officials said last weekend that the National Institutes of Health had awarded three of its research ers $120,323 for a two-year study of the tuberculosis-like lung disease’s source. Theorganisms, called atypic al mycobacteria, apparently cannot cause sickness or death alone, researchers said. Only when they infect a person al ready weakened by the likes of black lung disease, pneumonia or TB will the organisms have an appreciable impact on health. When a person’s health is already sub par, he is very susceptible to a disease of this type.” “We have proposed that the ocean is the reservoir for these organisms,” said Falkinham. “We are in the process of iso lating atypical mycobacteria from these waters and initiating experiments to help understand their physiological ecology — why can the organisms survive, what do they require?” he said. Each flower has one blossom, said Frabel. It is a less-ex pensive version of the seven blossom flower which the con sulate corps of Atlanta gave to Carter several years ago as part of an international goodwill award when he was governor of Georgia. “I think they want to cut down on the cost to the taxpayers,” Frabel said of the State Department’s decision to buy the smaller glass creations for Mrs. Carter’s trip. A spokeswoman for Frabel, who owns two shops in Atlanta, said 12 dogwood flowers were sold to the government for less than SSO apiece — the limit Carter has established in giving gifts to foreign leaders. He said he has about 160 sculptures, and spends at least eight hours a day working at his studio, blowing and sculpting glass. Each dogwood flower, for ex ample, takes 4 to 4% hours. (AP) - Tall apoosa Mayor Alta Sam Dryden and 25 other defendants face conspiracy and gasoline theft charges today as their federal court trial opens in Newnan. More than 30 persons were charged originally, but several have changed their pleas to guilty in the past week. The defendants were charged with conspiring to steal gasoline from interstate pipelines in Georgia and Alabama. Prose cutors contend that the scheme included selling the stolen fuel to gas stations at cut rate prices. Other defendants in the case include Police Chief Jimmy Doyle Folson, Asst. Police Chief Robert Lee Folson and City Councilman Buren Roobinson, all of Tallapossa.
