Griffin Daily News Monday, June 6,1977 Page 2 Deaths -F unerals Mrs. Garner Mrs. Alma Mae Cleveland Fogarty Gamer, 70, of Route 1, Brooks, died this morning at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital. Mrs. Gamer was bom in Meriwether County and had lived in Spalding County all of her life. She was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church and was a retired employe of Dundee No. One. She was the daughter of the late Bob Cleveland and the late May Belle Toland Cleveland. She is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. Velma Killingsworth, Mrs. Jean Tanksley, Mrs. Frances Manley, all of Brooks and Mrs. Charlotte McNeil of Atlanta; 2 sons, J. T. Fogarty and Melvin Fogarty, both of Brooks; 3 sisters, Mrs. Mattie Cliott, Mrs. Ruby Lunsford and Mrs. Bell Hawkins, all of Thomaston; 3 brothers, Willie Cleveland, Marion Cleveland and Carl Cleveland, all of Thomaston; 29 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the Fairview Baptist Church. The Rev. Brady Blalock and the Rev. Marvin Jimmerson will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be carried to the residence today to remain until the funeral hour. McDonald Chapel is in charge of plans. Grace buys Pic ’n Pay MATTHEWS, N. C. - W. R. Grace & Company and Pic ’N Pay Stores, Inc. announced an agreement in principle for Grace to acquire Pic 'N Pay, a 348 unit chain of self-service shoe stores and leased depart ments, principally in the southeastern United States. Pic ’N Pay operates a store in Griffin. The transaction provides for the issuance of 1 share of Grace common stock for each 2.3 Pic ’N Pay common shares outstanding at the time of closing. Pic ’N Pay presently has about 2,981,750 shares outstanding. The offering of Grace common stock will be made only by means of a prospectus. Completion of the acquisition is subject to the approval of the board of directors of Grace and the stockholders of Pic ’N Pay, the obtaining of a favorable tax ruling or opinion, and the negotiation and execution of a definitive agreement. The transaction is expected to be finalized during the fourth quarter of 1977. Pic ’N Pay will continue to operate under the existing management. Alfred Bolton merges firm with another H. Alfred Bolton 111, president of Griffin Engineering Company, P. C. announced the merger of his firm with Engineering Service Associates, Inc. of Birmingham, Ala. Griffin Engineering Company will operate as a division of Engineering Service Associates, Inc. and will continue to offer civil engineering and land surveying services with Mr. Bolton as president and Robert S. Mitchell as vice president. Engineering Service Associates, a Georgia corporation, will have offices in Birmingham and Griffin offering services in water and waste water engineering. Robert H. Morriss is president. Vice presidents are Bolton, Mitchell, and Frank E. Lindstrom. Morriss is a native of Brunswick and a civil engineering graduate of Georgia Tech. During his college years he was an employee of the City of Griffin. Prior to assuming the presidency of Engineering Service Associates he was director of public works for the City of Atlanta and for the City of Anchorage, Alaska and later vice president of a nation wide consulting engineering firm. Lindstrom is a civil engineering graduate of Auburn University. Mr. Thornton, Sr. The funeral for Mr. Washington Irving Thornton, Sr., 88, was held Sunday at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. The Rev. James Reeher officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include 3 daughters, Mrs. Sara Elizabeth Colbert of Warner Robins, Mrs. Mary Catherine Littleton of Barnesville and Mrs. Dorothy East of Jackson; a son, John Calvin Thornton of Jackson; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Tillery of Griffin; one grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Thornton died Saturday morning at Brightmoor Nursing Home. McDonald Chapel was in charge of plans. Mr. Murdock Mr. William Shildrake Murdock, 59, of Route one, Milner, died Saturday night after an illness of 2 years. Mr. Murdock was bom in Lamar County. He was a member of the Milner Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rebecca Campbell Murdock; a daughter, Miss Elizabeth Ann Murdock; a son, Kenneth Murdock, all of Milner; 3 stepchildren, Mark Spohn of Milner, Mrs. Jean Greer of Griffin and J. David Spohn of Riverdale; 5 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Sara M. Lemmons of Griffin; a niece and a nephew also survive. The funeral was conducted this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Milner Methodist Church. I The Rev. Douglas Hardin officiated and burial was in Oak Hill cemetery in Griffin. Hubbard Funeral Home of Barnesville was in charge of plans. Mrs. Kendall Mrs. Essie Kendall of 106 Apple street died Sunday night at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital. Mrs. Kendall was a lifelong resident of Griffin. She is survived by her husband, J. P. Kendall, Sr. Funeral plans will be announced by McDowell United Funeral Home. Mr. Fallins The funeral for Mr. Jesse “Monk" Fallins, formerly of Griffin, will be held Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio. William McNabb Funeral Home of Columbus is in charge of plans. Mr. Fallins died in Columbus June 2. He was the son of the late Joe Fallins and Mattie Fallins Parks, both of Spalding County. He is survived by 6 sisters, Mrs. Mary Jinks, Mrs. Annie Laura Morgan, Mrs. Rosa Piercy, all of Griffin, Mrs. Grace Hanson of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Mattie Andrews and Mrs. Betty Joe Abbington, both of Columbus, Ohio; 2 brothers, Clyde “Buck” Ballard of Griffin and Robert Ballard of Columbus, Ohio. Dumpster cases made Four people were arrested over the weekend for violating the county litter law. Sheriff’s officers said the 4 were accused of dumping items other than household garbage in county trash containers. Articles such as wood, wire, screen, pipes, auto parts, old appliances and dead animals are not to be placed in the containers. It also is a violation to dump whole truck loads of trash, officials said. Sheriff’s officers also were investigating the reported theft of a $750 outboard motor from a boat parked in Earl Vincent Thompson’s yard on Route 5. City police received a complaint from Tommy Young that 2 tires were moved from an auto parted at Tommy’s Used Car lot on Experiment street. ■ Walter Craver enjoys reading “Spiderman” in his bed at Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children. Doctors straightening Walter Craver’s back Walter Craver is back home after 24 days of recuperating from spinal surgery at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta. The 15-year-old foster son of Mrs. Emma J. Brassell of Moore street, has been paralyzed from the waist down since he was 2 years old and was accidently shot in the back with a shotgun. Since then he developed kyphoscoliosis, a curvature of the spine which was putting pressure on his kidneys and lungs. A body brace to stop the curvature did no good. The curve worsened, Mrs. Brassell said. He has undergone physical therapy and was fitted with a molded jacket to help slow the curving. Lions honor Shewfelt with Honduras school The Lions of District 18-E, Georgia, have contributed funds through CARE for the construction of a school in La J ingrit a, Municipality Catacamas, Department Olancho, Honduras. Called the La Esperanza school, a scroll is being placed in it in memory of Dr. A. Lome Shewfelt, recently deceased distinguished Griffin Lion. The dedication was initiated by Griffin Lions through Lovejoy Harwell, CARE Chairman of District 18-E, which is composed of 52 clubs in Spalding and surrounding counties. Dr. Shewfelt was Deputy District Governor when he died last year. He was CARE Chairman of his District year before last. Dr. Shewfelt’s work at The Georgia Experiment Station in food science is highly regarded throughout the nation’s professional and industrial personnel engaged in this important field. Mrs. Shewfelt, active in church and community affairs, lives on Wesley drive in Griffin. The LaEsperanza school in Honduras has two classrooms, kitchen, water and sanitary facilities. Before the surgery he was a student at the Play to Learn School at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Brassell, who has never had any children of her own, said she loves taking care of Walter. “He is a very bright child, education of an average of 38 students who live in isolated mountainous sections of their country and have been deprived of contact with most sources of education and instruction which would help in improving knowledge, health and living conditions. CARE, Inc., in cooperation with the Government of Honduras, is making an effort to improve the educational opportunities for primary school-age children. He’s slowly learning to read and write and when he learns it, he doesn’t forget. Mrs. Brassell said she has taught Walter to be independent. He can brush his teeth, comb his hair, make his bed and fold his clothes, she said. “Sometimes when I leave him to go grocery shopping, he surprises me by washing the dishes. I always give him some money to cheer him up and encourage him,” she said. “He just loves me to death and people tell me he’s very lucky to have me. They’ve called me a special person for keeping him. But I don’t feel special. Registration will be held in room 103 of the Math-Social Studies building on the Griffin High campus from Thursday, 8 to 4 o’clock, and Friday 8 till noon. Pre-registration is currently being held by the counselors in each secondary school. The registration fee is $lO plus sls per 5 quarter hour course. Students in grades 8-12 may register for up to 25 quarter hours. Seventh graders may register for make-up work only. The school system plans to offer the fellowing courses if the enrollment is sufficient: English, General Mathematics, Algebra I and 11, Georgia History, American History 8, World Geography, World History, U. S. History, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, General Science, Biology, Driver Education, Typing, and Business Mathematics. Greene joins First Baptist Victor A. Greene, Jr., is expected to report to the Griffin First Baptist Church early in August to become minister of youth. He will complete work on a master of divinity degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Ky., at the end of July. He and his wife, Allison, will move to Griffin early in August.
