Jett, Experiment; John David Jett, Experiment; Christy Lynn Police suspect murder-suicide Two Griffinites died from gunshot wounds in an apparent murder-suicide Sunday night. According to police, James Willie Banks, 23, of 123 North Third street, apparently shot Katherine Wilkerson, 20, of 850 East Solomon street, then turned the weapon on himself. Mrs. Wilkerson was dead on arrival at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital. Banks was treated in the local emergency room, then transferred to Macon Medical Center where he died about 11:21 p.m. Police were called to Banks’ home by a neighbor about 8 p.m. where the shooting occurred. Both victims were shot in the head, police said. Mrs. Wilkerson’s survivors include her mother, Mrs. Lizzie Mae Marion; son, Hersey Banks; grandmother, Mrs. Fannie Mae Bivins; 2 sisters, Mrs. Katie Ruth Mack and Mrs. Shelia Nash; 3 brothers, Johnny Wilkerson, Lewis E. Mack, Jr., and Sammy L. Mack; and other relatives. Exchange Club elects directors The Griffin Exchange Club has elected Ray Barron, Gene Dabbs, Tony Goodroe, Frank Moore, Feed Omundson and Jack Park as directors. According to the Griffin Post of the Georgia State Patrol, cars driven by Wilbur A. Prince, 28, of Route 1, Box 302, and Randy Scott Matthews, 17, of New Salem road, collided almost head on about 7:30 p.m. Both drivers were treated at the Griffin Hospital emergency room for injuries. Matthews later was transferred to Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta. Matthews’ passengers who also were treated in the local emergency room, included Mike Kent, 15, 1222 Winona Talmadge: Young’s statements may be calculated ATLANTA (AP) - U.N. Am bassador Andrew Young’s sometimes-controversial state ments on Africa may be calcu lated to block Soviet expansion in that continent, Sen. Herman Talmadge (D-Ga.) said Sunday. “Andy’s been rather free wheeling in some of his state ments, but it might serve a good purpose,” Talmadge said during an interview on At lanta’s WSB-TV. “I think he’s articulating the hopes and aspirations of most Africans and that probably gives the government of the United States more credi bility,” Talmadge explained. The outspoken Young has been criticized in South Africa for labeling that country’s gov ernment “illegitimate.” On another subject, Tal madge said his pending divorce settlement, which involves a dispute over property, will probably be resolved by a jury trial. Georgia’s senior senator did not elaborate on his marital problems.„ Responding to questions, Tal madge said he plans to vote against the administration’s proposed “instant voter regis tration proposal,” and said he favors a “crash progran to de velop alternate sources of ener gy.” Talmadge said immediate voter registration at the polls on election day would “open the door to too much fraud.” He said he did not believe such a registration program would have a significant effect on vot er turnout. “The reason people aren’t voting is that they’ve been lied to so often by politi cians,” he said. Troopers said Matthews was driving under the influence and suspected marijuana was found in his possession. Several On energy, Talmadge said he was in general agreement with Carter’s conservation program but had reservations about a proposed gasoline tax. He said such a tax would be an unfair burden on persons who drive long distances to work, and that a rebate to such motorists would defeat the purpose of the tax. Talmadge said the adminis tration should focus on the de velopment of other energy re sources, such as coal. He said that environmental standards might have to be re laxed in a switch over from natural gas to coal. He added, however, “we have to use our common sense. Bth St. charges were placed against him, including driving on the wrong side of the road and having an altered driver’s license. Three Griffinites were injured in a collision on the North Expressway and Varsity road Friday. They included John Edgar Cadenhead, 20, of Zebulon and his passengers, Steve Driver, 20, 1316 Boyd row, and Bobby Walten, 26, of 313 North Fifth streets. Mrs. Cora Mae James of Meriwether street escaped injury, according to Griffin police. Two city vehicles were damaged in traffic weekend mishaps, police said. A fire truck was severely damaged in a collision on East Poplar street involving 2 autos. The truck, driven by James Gary McLendon, was headed to a fire. Two autos had pulled over and had stopped waiting for the truck to pass when the - right side of the truck struck the rear of one of the cars, knocking it into the other stopped auto, police said. Police said McLendon said he thought he had room to get through. Annie Cook of Finley street and Mary Will Letson of Bucksnort road were the other drivers. There was some damage to their cars. A Griffin police car was damaged slightly when it hit a sign at the Commercial Bank and Trust Co. at Spalding Square. Officer Karen Jett was driving, police said.
