Little League playoffs
to open with consolation
Griffin Little League playoffs begin Monday with a
Consolation Tournament at Patrick Park Field No. 1.
The tournament opens with Dundee, runners-up in the
National League, playing Commercial Bank, the third
place team in the American League, at 6 p.m.
Moose, runners-up in the AL, play Jaycees, the third
place team in the NL, at 8 p.m.
The losers of those games play Tuesday at 6 p.m. and
the winners tangle at 8 p.m. in the double-elimination
tournament.
The Consolation Tournament continues Wednesday at
5:30.

The second game of the best 2-of-3 series will be played
Thursday at 8 p.m. following a 5:30 p.m. game in the
Consolation Tournament.
The third game, if necessary, will be played Friday at 8
p.m.
Little League fans were reminded that the first games
Monday and Tuesday begin at 6 p.m. and the first games
Wednesday and Thursday start at 5:30 p.m.

The freshman right-hander
wiggled out of a bases-loaded
jam and pitched three innings of
one-hit relief to hand South
Carolina its first loss of the
series.
He stalked around the mound,
jumped up and down after
strikes, frequently backed off
the mound and taunted batters
to get in the box.
“Allen really put on quite a
show,” said Arizona State
Coach Jim Brock. “Coming in
and throwing fast balls after
Mitch (Dean) had thrown so
many breaking pitches kept
them off balance.”
Southern Illinois staged the
biggest comeback of the series
and up-ended California State-
Los Angeles 9-7 in the night’s
elimination-round game.

Mike Slade went the distance
on the mound for Mayfield,
striking out 11 and walking 6.
Chip Davis and Chad Byne
were on the mound for the
Packers. Davis started and was
relieved by Byne in the fourth.
They struck out 12 and walked 8.
All of the hits were singles.
Todd Bunn, Zach Buchanan
and Joe Maddox were the
hitters for Mayfield.
Byne had 2 hits for the
Packers and Mitchell Thomas
had the other.

because he pitched very well for
them.
“But delaying tactics like that
have no place in the College
World Series and shouldn’t be
allowed. Coach Brock was
trying to intimidate our players
with those tactics.”
Brock denied that.

Lee Whelchel was charged
with the loss. He struck out 5,
walked 8 and gave up 5 hits.

Reds to conduct
clinic at Macon
The Cincinnati Reds will
conduct an evaluation clinic for
baseball players in Macon on
June 25 at Luther Williams
Field at 10 a.m.
Players ranging from high
school sophomores through
players up to 22 years of age are
invited to attend.
The camp will be under the
direction of Scouting Supervisor
George Zuraw. He’ll be assisted
by Georgia Scout Julian Mock.
