— Griffin Daily News Friday, July 8,1977 Page 6 George Washington City commission something special WASHINGTON, England (AP) — George Washington thought the trip was “out of sight,” and the British press thought Washington himself was something special. Washington, a 57-year-old black postal clerk, is one of more than 380 Georgians par ticipating Ln the Friendship Force exchange program be tween Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, and Atlanta. On Thursday, he and his wife Daisy joined most of the Geor gia ambassadors on a tour of the castles and cathedrals of Durham County. But the main item on Wash ington’s agenda was the ancest ral home of his namesake, President George Washington. Apparently, the postal clerk was the first person in memory with the same name as first U.S. president to visit the brownstone manor house about J PIANOS I By I fl Kohler & Campbell v Now In Stock. And the occasion didn’t go un noticed. Reporters and photographers swarmed around Washington, paying more attention to him than to President Jimmy Car ter’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Allie Smith, 71, who also came along on the tour. Before reaching Washington OldHall, the Georgians and their Newcastle hosts, called Geordies, eagerly watched the signposts for names of villages like Philadelphia and Cleve land. They even came across the tiny community of Pity Me. “The story behind the name is that one bloke said to another, ‘Pity me, I’m single,”’ a Geordie explained. “Then the other bloke said ‘No, pity me. I’m married.’” Another spot on the tour was Durham Cathedral, 10 miles from Washington, where the Georgians once again were re minded of their ties with Brit ain. The group of more than 300 was seated in the church, where people have worshiped for 800 years, and heard from the catherdal dean, the Venerable C.J. Stranks, that they were the largest group ever to tour the cathedral. “Prior John of Washington once was part of this church," he said. “He came from a fam ily which, of course, later was to give America its first presi dent.” By the time the group got to Washington, three days of con stant activity was beginning to take its toll. Lucky Seven Some Griffin area people shared in the “lucky seven” day Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dodson of Box 60, Locust Grove, had a son bom at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital on the seventh day of (Continued from page 1) Also the commissioners saw no mention of a $2,000 expense account for Director Walter Murphy which board Chairman Paul Kurtz mentioned at an earlier meeting. Goldstein did not understand why in an earlier budget sub mitted by the library requesting $119,000, city and county con tributions for salaries totaled $87,000 for the year just ending and SIOB,OOO for the new year, while the new more detailed budget showed salaries totaling $53,479 from local government contributions. “I believe they can operate on half the personnel. The old library operated with 2 people. They should cut out all of those executive positions and sum mer help,” he stated. “I don’t think the budget’s true. I’m in favor of telling them where to cut. See what help they can eliminate, then see what salaries they can cut,” he continued. Goldstein also noted that in addition to salaries, more than Miss Zager honored Cathleen Zager, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Zager of Laramie road in Griffin, graduated from the University of Georgia summa cum laude. Miss Zager was also admitted to Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies after achieving a 3.9 average in 4 years of study at the university. She plans to continue her education at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio where she will work on a master’s degree in computer science. the seventh month of 1977 and it weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces. Over in Brooks, Chuck Coogler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Coogler, reached his seventh birthday on the lucky seven day. $32,000 is paid in fringe benefits, such as insurance, retirement, and social security. The budget also showed decreases in library income from fines and the copying machine. “I know you all are tired of hearing me say it. But I’m not tired of saying it. It’s double taxation for city residents to pay anything toward the library. The reason I voted to cut the budget was to save my county tax money,” Goldstein said. In another vote, concerning the Health Department, the commissioners were unanimous. They all agreed the city should not be responsible for maintaining the health department building. They reasoned that even though the city and county each own a half interest in the structure, the county is legally responsible for operating the health department. The city has been letting the health depart ment use it rent free and therefore should not be responsible for spending any money on repairs, the com missioners said. Goldstein said he was not in favor of the city’s giving the county the building outright but would favor an exchange for some jointly owned land. The city and school board will have more time to settle their differences over who gets how much of public works funds. According to City Manager Roy Inman, the city has been granted a 28 day extension to Tuesday’s deadline for applying for the money. Wednesday Supt. Ben Christie, after meeting with some school staff members and board member Russell Smith, turned down the city’s final offer of $304,080 of the federal money. Christie said the school board voted to hold out for the entire $330,000 requested. The commissioners will try again and plan to ask the entire school board to reconsider during its meeting Monday night. They are afraid the school board’s action may tie up the money for about a year. It could jeopardize the city’s getting some $600,000 needed for a new 1-million gallon water tank. The schools want their share to go toward construction of 8 kindergarten classrooms at Anne Street School. (AP) — U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young, noted for his controversial statements, may appear on a weekly half-hour talk show dealing with the United Nations or other foreign policy issues. Producers David Garth and Arnold Michaelis have dis cussed the idea for the show with Young and others in the U.S. United Nations mission, a mission press officer said, and are now offering it to TV outlets. The last step would be clearance from the White House for Young’s in volvement. One of Young’s associates said Young would be “willing to go along with it if they (the producers) can work it out." Princess Margaret LONDON (AP) — A London jeweler paid SIO,OOO more than the auctioneers expected for an emerald pendant owned by Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth’s sister. Jeweler Laurence Graff got the pendant for 10,000 pounds — $17,000 — at an auction at Sotheby’s Thursday and said he was prepared to pay a lot more. The auction house estimated the jewel, which included a gold chain, a ruby and some pearls, would bring between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds ($5,100 to $6,800). A spokesman said the royalty ownership of the pendant caused the higher than expected sale price. (AP) — The man who gave the world “The Peter Principle” has donated manuscripts of his two best-selling books to Washington State University, a school spokesman said. Laurence J. Peter became a celebrity in 1969, when “The Peter Principle” was published. It outlines his theory that every employe in every organization even tually rises to his or her own level of incompetence. The manuscript of that book and a sequel, “The Peter Plan” are being turned over to the university where Peter received a doctorate in education in 1963. Prince Charles STAND OFF, Alberta (AP) — Prince Charles had his face painted and donned a headress as part of a solemn induction as a Kainai chief. The Blood Indian tribe also gave him a pinto horse, a hand-tooled saddle and a cen turies old peace pipe. The 28-year-old Prince of Wales was given the name Mekaisto, or Red Crow, on Thursday and welcomed into the fold at the Blood reservation, 96 miles south of Calgary.
