Makes good
as a janitor?
HOLLYWOOD - Pat Har
rington earned a Masters
Degree in political philoso
phy at Fordham University
-- and wound up as a jani
tor.
Obviously, Harrington is
not your ordinary, soiled
clothes, unskilled-laboring
janitor. He is, rather, the
suave, slightly lecherous
superintendent in one of
television’s top-rated series,
“One Day At A Time,”
which goes into its second
full season (it actually has
been going a season and a
half) at CBS next fall. It will
remain on Tuesday nights
at 9:30, fortuitously follow
ing “M*A*S*H”, which is as
good a lead-in as any show
could desire.
“My father was a bear on
education,” Harrington
recalls. “He was a song
and-dance man who per
formed in 25 Broadway
plays. I may have had show
business aspirations when I
was a kid, but I guess it was
subliminal. I never pressed
it.”
In a sense, and despite his
masters in political philoso
phy, Harrington wound up
in show business, but the
relationship was indirect.
He joined the sales depart
ment at NBC.
Much of his father’s show
biz background did rub off
on the young Harrington
(his father was Pat Har
rington Sr.), who suddenly
found himself the resident
stand-up comic for the NBC
sales department.
“It came in handy as I
tried to outlive my Irish-

upbringing,” Harrington
says with a broad grin.
“Soon, they were using me
in the NBC sales depart
ment as a sales tool. I used
to work the important
lunches.”
Harrington had effected
certain comical characters
of varying ethnic origins.
One of them was extremely
popular -- Guido Pinzini,
who first was introduced as
a golf pro at these lunches,
later as Junior Officer on
the Andrea Doria (the
Italian ship that sank off the
coast, shortly after sailing
from New York).
A friendly push by a
coworker, Lynn Phillips, at
NBC, sent Pat Harrington
(he billed himself then as
Jr.) on a career as a per
former. Jack Paar was
hosting “The Tonight Show”
in those days (23 years ago,
Harrington easily recalls)
and brought Pat onto the
show one night to do the
Italian golf pro shtick. It
was very funny, and Har
rington became an immedi
ate hit. As frequently hap
pens in these circum
stances, he was an over
night star.
He played the coffee
house and cabaret circuit,
frequently appeared as
guest on variety shows, and
made innumerable ap
pearances with Paar on
late-night television.
