anybody makes a move he was just
gonna kill everybody. He held the gun
up in my face. Everybody started
crying.. .He said he would kill me.”
Another passenger, Willie Earl
Bridges, 24, of Spartanburg, S.C., said
he was sitting in a third-row seat when
the bus was pirated.
“He asked us if we’d ever been
kidnapped before,” Bridges said of the
black gunman. “Then he said ‘Now you
know what it’s like.’”
“He said to cooperate and nobody
would get hurt,” Bridges said. “He split
us up. He put the blacks at the back of
the bus and the whites at the front. I
don't know why.
“He made us hold our hands up in the
air for 45 minutes. At first I thought he
was going to rob us, but he didn’t. He
just told the bus driver to ride and he’d
let us go.”

Griffin Lodge of Moose 1503

(Buddy) Keel with its
meritorious award last night at
a special ceremony by
Governor James Chappell. The
ceremony was held at the
Griffin Lodge.
Keel was honored for saving
the life of fellow co-worker
Karry Hines on June 7. Keel and
Hines were loading a dozer
onto a low-boy on High Falls
road when the accident oc
cured. Hines had loaded the
tractor onto the low-boy from a
bank when he realized he was
too near the edge. The metal
track caught and caused the
tractor to shift and start to fall.
Hines tried to jump as Keel
moved away from the falling
equipment. Keel did not see
Hines fall beneath the cab, but
he could hear him shouting. The
motor continued to run, digging
itself into the ground. Hines
managed to get to the switch
and turn it off and the tractor
lifted. Keel saw a chance at that
split second to free Hines. He
did not know what the equip
ment would do but he managed
to get in and under the tractor
and pull the struggling Hines
from beneath the machine
before it thundered back to
earth.
Making the presentation,
Chappell said, “Karry lost both
of his legs but his life was saved
by the quickness of Buddy. This
