Gavin MacLeod
making his way
By DAN LEWIS
HOLLYWOOD -- When the
“Mary Tyler Moore Show”
went off the air, the produc
tion company had all of its
stars laced to contracts for
future television projects,
with one exception. That
was Gavin MacLeod, who
played the bald, bland
writer in the TV newsroom.
MTM Productions,
presided over by Miss
Moore’s husband, Grant
Tinker, had developed
deals for Ted Knight, Ed
Asner and Betty White.
They also had Georgia
Engel under contract. CBS
picked up a series that ex
tends Asner’s role as Lou
Grant. Now Lou’s in Los
Angeles as managing editor
of a daily newspaper. Betty
White also will have her
own show on CBS, portray
ing the star of a TV show
that is directed by her ex
husband. Georgia Engel is
featured in this series.
There was a pilot for Ted
Knight, but it got nowhere.
As for MacLeod, who play
ed Murray Slaughter on the
show, when Mary Tyler
Moore called it quits this
year after seven seasons,
Gavin MacLeod got a nice
“thank you” and “we’U be
seeing you around some
time” with the farewells.
MTM Productions made no
effort to tie him up.
There is no bitterness,
MacLeod insists. He shrugs
off the fact that Tinker
never bothered to lasso his
services along with the
others by saying, “They
were the ones who got
shortchanged."

“Remember, Murray was
not a character of great col
or, or vitality," MacLeod
rationalizes. “He was al
ways the one who came
through the door last.”
He points out that he alone
of the major players on the
show never won an Emmy.
He was never even nomi
nated for one during the en
tire seven years.
“But it worked out. I’m
grateful,” he says, adding
the series “made me a
saleable commodity.”
The fact that MacLeod
will star in his own series on
ABC next season is of dou
ble comfort to him. He got
the series on his own mo
mentum, without Grant
Tinker or MTM Productions
to push for him. ABC came
after him.
