Atlanta Braves catcher Biff Pocoroba awaits the baseball in seventh inning at Atlanta-

run came after Giants Derrel Thomas’ bad hop infield single off the chest of Braves Darrel
Chaney. Nevertheless, the Braves won 3-2. (AP)

CINCINNATI (AP) — Sparky Anderson says one reason
he named Willie Montanez to the National League All-Stqr
team Friday was that he “felt bad” because he didn’t pick
the Atlanta Braves’ first baseman for the 1976 squad.
“I did him wrong,” said Anderson, who, as skipper of
the pennant-winning Cincinnati Reds, picked the second
line players for Tuesday night’s All-Star game in New
York.
“I should have picked him (last year), but didn’t, and I
felt bad about that for a long time,” said Anderson. “He
belonged on the team.”
He also said he wasn’t bothered by any complaints that
he should have named Montanez’ teammate, outfielder
Jeff Burroughs. “I think Montanez is having a better year
and deserves it more,” he said.
Laurence has surgery
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Flames’ No. 2 draft pick
this year, Don “Red” Laurence, underwent bone graft
surgery on his right leg Friday, the National Hockey
League team said.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound center was scheduled for
surgery in Toronto to correct a broken bone which didn’t
heal properly, the team said.
Before breaking the leg last December, Laurence was
the highest-scoring player in junior hockey, collecting 43
goals and 45 assists in 35 games for Kitchener in the
Ontario Hockey Association.
Mitchell unhappy
ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Falcons tight end Jim
Mitchell says he will be in Greenville, S.C., next week
when the National Football League team opens training
camp, but he won’t be happy.
“I’ll go,” said Mitchell, who has asked to be traded,
“but I don’t know if they want me to. Falcons General
Manager Eddie Leßaron says he doesn’t want any
unhappy players in camp and I’m unhappy. But I’ll go if I
have to.”
Head Coach Leeman Bennett said he needs Mitchell, a
nine-year veteran, to shore up the team’s offensive line.
Mitchell, who had his worst season last year when he
caught only 16 passes for a meager 209 yards, said he
would prefer to play for the St. Louis Cardinals, “but I’d
go anywhere.”

“I don’t know if I could have
finished the game or not, but
when he said he was going to
take me out, that was that. He
runs the show.”
Solomon, making only his
second start for the Atlanta
Braves since being called up
from Richmond, squared his
record at 1-1 with a 3-2 victory
over the San Francisco Giants
Friday night.
He had just worked out of a
bases-loaded jam in the sixth
with a pair of outstanding
catches by outfielders Jeff Bur
roughs and Brian Asseistine,
prompting Manager Dave Bris
tol to make his move.
“Yes, I figured he was tired,”
Bristol said. “He had been
going the distance in Richmond
but the heat and humidity in
Richmond isn’t anything like
the heat and humidity in
Atlanta. You’ve got to make
your move when you think it’s
right and if that doesn’t work,
you make another.”
It took two other moves be
fore Bristol found the solution.
The Giants trimmed a 3-0 lead
to 3-2 in the seventh on Derrel
Thomas’ bad-hop infield single
off shortstop Darrel Chaney’s
glove after loading the bases
against relievers Jamie Easter
ly and Dave Campbell.
Bristol then went to relief ace
Rick Camp, who got out of that
inning and blanked the Giants
over the final two frames to
record his 10th save of the year.
“He’s been in some tough sit
uations and handled ‘em well,”
Bristol said of Camp. “You got
to like that.”
Solomon ended up driving in
the winning run when he beat
out an infield single off John
Montefusco, 2-8, when the
Braves erupted for three runs
with two out in the fourth.
Asselstine started the rally
with his second homer of the
year into the right field seats.
Chaney singled and Rod Gil
breath sent him to third with a
double, and both runners ad
vanced when outfielder Terry
Whitfield overthrew second for
an error. Gilbreath then crossed
on Solomon’s hit toward second.
“We had a bad inning and
they scored three runs,” said
Giants’ Manager Joe Altobelli.
“They had a bad inning and we
scored two. That was the differ
ence.”

Nervous time for Herman Franks
By KEN RAPPOPORT
AP Sports Writer
It’s nervous time for Herman
Franks.
Oh, he won’t admit it—but
Danny Ozark will.
“I don’t know how much you
can shock a professional, but
I’m sure we got ’em thinking,”
says the Philadelphia Phillies
manager.
What Franks is no doubt
thinking about today is his Chi
cago Cubs’ lead in the National
League East. It dwindled to two
games after Friday night’s 4-2,
9-2 doubleheader loss to the
Phillies—and could be even less
after the four-game series in
Philadelphia is over Sunday.
“We’re after both games to
give them something to think
about over the All-Star break,”
said Greg Luzinski, who tor
mented the Cubs with a pair of
homers Friday night.
A sweep of the series would
put the Phillies into a firstplace
tie with the Cubs before the
three-day break for Tuesday
night’s All-Star Game. That, of
course, would be quite a
comedown for the Cubs, who led
by as many as 8 % games as
recently as June 29.
On the surface, Franks will
admit to no distress.
“I’m just worrying about to
day now,” he said. “And if we
lose, I’ll worry about tomorrow.
And if we lose Sunday, so we’ll
be tied with the Phillies and
we’ll still have half a season to
play.”
But some of his surface tran
quility slipped when he was
prodded by reporters. He said
disgustingly:
“How can I get you guys to
understand that I worry about
every game, every team, that
this series is no more important
than the one in New York!”

There is plenty of power in
this year’s NL starting lineup.
George Foster of Cincinnati has
29 homers, Steve Garvey of Los
Angeles 22, Greg Luzinski of
Philadelphia 21 and catcher
Johnny Bench of Cincinnati 20.
In reserve, the NL can call on
big hitters like Mike Schmidt of
Philadelphia (26 homers) and
Dave Winfield of San Diego
(21).
The only NL starter not in
double figures for home run
production is Cincinnati short
stop Dave Concepcion, who will
combine with teammate Joe
Morgan for a slick double play
combination. At the infield cor
ners will be the Los Angeles duo
of first baseman Garvey and
rates stopped the New York
Mets 7-1 in the first game of a
doubleheader before losing the
nightcap 6-1.
Luzinski knocked in four runs
with his two homers. Luzinski’s
two-run homer in the sixth in
ning of the first game erased a
2-0 Cub lead, and Ted Sizemore
singled in the winning run in the
middle of a two-run seventh.
In the second game, Luzinski
led off a game-breaking, three
run sixth with his 21st homer of
the season, equaling his entire
1976 production. It was his fifth
homer in the last four games.
Right-hander Jim Lonborg, 3-

hits in the nightcap. Larry
Christenson, 8-5, earned the
opening victory, with relief help
from Tug McGraw, who got his
fourth save.

Mike Champion singled home
Jerry Turner in the eighth in

spark San Diego over Los
Angeles. Champion, who led
San Diego’s 10-hit attack with
three singles and two RBI, also
scored in the eighth. After tak
ing second base on the throw to
the plate, he came home on re
liever Dan Spillner’s single.
Reds 8, Astros 3
George Foster, Johnny Bench
and Mike Lum drove in two runs
each to help rookie Paul
Moskau gain his first major
league victory as Cincinnati de
feated Houston.
The torrid-hitting Foster, who
slugged three home runs Thurs
day night, slammed his 29th
homer with one on in the sixth,
giving him 90 runs batted in.
Moskau, 1-1, allowed two runs
on four hits before yielding in
the seventh to Dale Murray,
who himself needed relief help
from Pedro Borbon in the ninth.
Astro starter Gene Pentz, 2-1,
took the loss.
