Carter rejects request to appoint
special prosecutor for Korean scandal
WASHINGTON (AP) - Atty.
Gen. Griffin Bell says he ex
pects prosecutions to result
from the Justice Department
investigation of the South Ko
rean influence-buying scandal
on Capitol Hill.
Bell made the statement
Monday after President Carter
turned down Republican re
quests for appointment of a
special prosecutor, patterned
after the Watergate special
prosecutor, to pursue the Ko
rean scandal.
Asked what the Justice De

except that it is perhaps being
conducted at a faster pace be

House Thomas P. O’Neill said
he would take personal charge

Korean scandal.
O’Neill said he wants quick
appointment of a new chief in

23-year-old
charged
in murder
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.
(AP) — A 23-year-old man has
been charged with murder in
the death of Paul Steve Lemons
of Marathon, Fla., Gwinnett
County Police said.
Authorities would say only
that Lemons’ body was found
near a street in Lawrenceville.
Details on the slaying were not
released.

Years of American Art, 1945-
1975,” featuring selections from
its permanent collection, is on
display at the Whitney Museum
through October 23. The exhibit
focuses on five main artistic
modes: abstract ex-
pressionism, American
surrealism, the precisionist
aesthetic and minimalism, pop
art and realism. It is the first of
a series of exhibitions focusing
on twentieth-century American
art in the Whitney’s permanent
collection.

Jasper man arrested
JASPER, Ga. (AP) — A 37-year-old Jasper man has
been arrested in the shooting death of Billy Franklin Ray,
38, of Roswell, officials said.
Pickens County authorities said Joe W. Bridges was
being held Monday after Ray was shot with a 20-gauge
shotgun in front of the Pickens County hospital.
Walthall appointed
ATLANTA (AP) — Frank Walthall Jr., president of
Walthall Oil Co., has been appointed to the state
disciplinary board, the disciplinary enforcement arm of
the State Bar of Georgia.
The appointment was announced by Chief Justice H.E.
Nichols of the Georgia Supreme Court.
Dr. Webster appointed
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — The Medical College of Georgia
has named Dr. Paul D. Webster 111 chairman of its
department of medicine.
Webster received his B.S. in chemistry from the
University of Richmond, Va., and his MD from Bowman
Gray school of Medicine at Wake Forest University.
Limit water
WARNER ROBINS, Ga.(AP) - Residents of Warner
Robins and a portion of Jones County have a choice, ac
cording to Jones County water system superintendent
Robert Andrews.
“It’s either they can limit the amount of water they are
using, or they will run out,” he said.
Officials said Warner Robins, which draws its water
from wells, has been hard hit by the state’s drought.
"We need a heavy rain and we need for the weather to
cool off because the tanks are almost empty every night,”
said Mayor Foy Evans of Warner Robins.
Gunman robs bank
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A gunman robbed the
Citizens Bank of Douglasville Monday, escaping with an
undisclosed amount of money, Douglas County authorities
said.
Deputies said the man entered the bank about 5 p.m.,
displayed a weapon and fled with some cash.
A car believed to be the getaway vehicle was found in a
wooded area near here, but tracking dogs were unable to
pick up a scent, detectives said.

Tobacco
prices
increase
VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - Av
erage prices on the Georgia-
Florida flue-cured tobacco
markets rose on Monday, the
fourth day of trading, the U.S.
Department so Agriculture
reported.
Compared to last Friday,
most heavy grades sold for $6 to
$9 higher Monday, USDA said.
In addition, the quality of of
ferings was better, although
volume continued to be light on
several markets, the USDA
added.
Primings and nondescript
grades made up more than 70
per cent of the sales.

grossed 11.2 million pounds and
average $79.34 per hun
dredweight. The average repre
sented a decline of $13.92 com
pared to the first week of auc
tions last year, when sales
grossed 20.6 million pounds and
averaged $93.26 a hundred.
Receipts at the stabilization

with 33.2 per cent during the
first three days of auctions in

Opposes freight hike
GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia Poultry
Federation has called “completely unreasonable” a
planned 20 per cent increase in rail freight rates for feed
grain shipments in the Southeast.
The hike, proposed by the Southern Freight Association
for the Sept. 15-Dec.ls grain harvest season, affects ship
ments among points in the Southeast, Indiana and Illinois.
Poultry Federation President Ed Houston said the rate
hike “confronts us with the need to look to the trucking
industry as a possible alternative to some $1.25 million in
additional freight costs.”
