Carter concerned over steel price hike WASHINGTON (AP) - Pres ident Carter, disappointed by a new U.S. Steel Corp, price in crease, is concerned that the hike could undermine the ad ministration’s anti-inflation program, his chief economic adviser says. “The government can’t do it along. There has to be some general restraint shown by oth ers,” Charles L. Schultze, chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, said of the anti-inflation effort. Schultze, who asked reporters to his office Thursday evening, criticized U.S. Steel shortly after the nation’s largest steel maker announced price in creases of 6 per cent on struc tural steel and 7 per cent on tin mill steel. “The administration believes such action is clearly inconsist ent with efforts to control the inflation rate,” Schultze said. He said Carter had “expressed his sharp disappointment with this development.” Structural steel is used in construction, while tin mill steel is used in food and beverage cans. Officials said a bat would have to be caught before it could be determined if any of the bites had a chance of turning into cases of rabies in humans. University Public Safety Di rector Lowell Muse said bats Although U.S. Steel said the increase is needed to offset higher labor charges and other costs, Schultze said the steel in dustry has raised its prices in recent months much faster than the average increase for all American industry. “We’ve got to let the public know about it,” he said, when asked what the criticism would accomplish. “We have to look at it in terms of what’s been happening.” If other steelmakers follow U.S. Steel’s lead, he said, over all steel prices will be 12.5 per cent higher than they were in September. The latest increase is the fifth significant hike in 10 months, he added. The steel price increase and the Carter administration’s criticism of it came on the same day that the government issued another unfavorable report on inflation, showing the struggle to contain rising prices has a long way to go. The Labor Department said consumer prices rose six-tenths of 1 per cent in June, the same as in May, and were up 4.4 per cent for the first six months of "AMERICA ’S BEST PORTRAIT BUY’’ 24 COLOR PORTRAITS SPECIAL PACKAGE 2 —Bx 10 4-3x5 18-WALLET SIZE MINIMUM $350 DEPOSIT BALANCE PAID UPON DELIVER Y the Landscape Architecture building warning the possibility of rabid bats. Some administration officials had indicated they expected a much better price performance in June after recent improve ments in wholesale prices, in cluding a decline of six-tenths of 1 per cent in June. The administration took heart from another key economic re port that showed the economy grew at a healthy 6.4 per cent rate in the second quar ter of the year, as measured by 'the gross national product. The same report revised upward the first quarter growth to 7.5 per cent from the 6.9 per cent reported previously. Combined, the growth during the first six months of the year averaged about 7 per cent, well above the administration’s tar get for over-all economic Mail bomb injures women YULEE, Fla. (AP) — A team of federal agents has been sent to this Northeast Florida town to try to find out who mailed a letter bomb to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Holland and why they did it. The package blew up as Linda Holland, 24, opened it. She was listed in fair condition late Thursday at a hospital in Jacksonville, 20 miles south of here. Her children, Heather, 5, and James, 1, had slight injuries but The national Center for Dis ease Control said about 30,000 persons a year are treated for rabies in the United States after being bitten by a rabid animal. The disease usually is fatal, unless a victim begins treat ment almost immediately after being bitten, CDC added. Since 1970, there have been 13 cases of rabies in humans and only one survived. The administration ex pects an easing in economic growth to a rate of about 5 per cent during the second half of the year, still a favorable fig ure. Some economists have ex pressed concern that the na tion’s economy might run out of steam in the second half of the year and could undergo a sharp slowdown, similar to the one in 1976 when unemployment began climbing again after mid-year. This could occur again if GNP growth slips below a 4 per cent rate. Unemployment did increase in June to 7.1 per cent, up from 6.9 per cent in May and the first increase in several months. Retail sales have sagged for three consecutive months, another sign that a slowdown of some degree is at hand. weren’t hospitalized.
