Goff returns
agent fee
to Broncos
MOULTRIE, Ga. (AP) -
Talk not of money-hungry ath
letes when discussing former
University of Georgia quarter
back Ray Goff.
Goff gave the Denver Broncos
a SI,OOO refund when it became
apparent that he wasn’t going to
make the National Football
League team.
“My dad always taught me
not to take things for nothing,”
Goff said. “A lot of people think
I’m crazy to give that much
money back. But I didn’t go up
there looking for something
free. I didn’t do anything to earn
a thousand dollars.”
So now he’s back in Moultrie
— with a gas station he and a
friend opened this week — and
planning to help coach the
Georgia football teams this fall.
Goff led the Bulldogs to 9-3
and 10-2 seasons the last two
years, but he was a running
quarterback and not noted for
his passing. Thus he was ig
nored in the NFL draft and
made it to Denver as a free
agent, signing for the standard
SI,OOO free agent bonus.
After five days in the Bron
co’s training camp it became
apparent that his passing
wasn’t up to standards. Den
ver’s coaches told him to work
on his passing or try to make the
team as a defensive back.
“I thought maybe the Lord
was trying to tell me some
thing,” Goff said about the pos
sible move to defensive back.
. So Goff told General Manager
Fred Gehrke he was leaving —
and returned the SI,OOO.

Hernandez, Reuschel
deal Braves loss in 12
By JOE MOOSHIL
AP Sports Writer
CHICAGO (AP) - Contrary
to common belief, Bruce Sutter
is not the entire Chicago Cubs’
bullpen. There are a couple of
guys out there named Willie
Hernandez and Paul Reuschel.
With Sutter sidelined because
of a knot in his back, Hernandez
and Reuschel had a chance to go
full steam Thursday and their
combined efforts helped the
Chicago Cubs deal the Atlanta
Braves a 4-3 loss in 12 innings.
Hernandez hurled two perfect
innings in relief of starter Bill
Bonham, and Reuschel worked
the final two innings in which he
allowed only one walk to gain
the victory. Bill Buckner ended
the game with a runscoring
pinch single in the 12th.
Hernandez and Reuschel
have done an excellent job this
season. But when a game has
been on the line, Manager Her
man Franks understandingly
has gone to Sutter who has piled
up 24 saves, five victories and a
1.11 earned run average.
Hernandez has a 3-3 record with
two saves and a snappy 1.89
earned run average and
Reuschel is now 4-1 with three

bye then beat Morrow-Lake
City 4-3 to advance to the semis.
East Coweta defeated Stock-
saves and a 2.25 ERA.
“Bruce has picked us up all
year,” said Reuschel. “Now
there’s a chance for us to do
something. I’d rather see Sutter
out there but without him we
have an opportunity to show
what we can do.”
Hernandez, a 22-year-old
rookie lefthander drafted out of
the Philadelphia system said,
“I know what I have to do now. I
have to save some games and
also finish up. I’m young, strong
and feel good. I can go three or
four innings every day.”
Hernandez and Reuschel got
a chance to prove their worth
Thursday because of a three-run
rally in the fourth inning led by
Jose Cardenal who doubled and
took third on a balk. Larry
Biittner drew a walk and when
Bobby Murcer grounded to first
baseman Willie Montanez,
Cardenal broke for the plate.
Montanez threw home only to
see Cardenal scramble back to
third leaving the bases filled.
Cardenal scored on a ground out
and Biittner scored on Manny
Trillo’s single.
Atlanta tied it in the sixth on a
single by Jeff Burroughs, a
walk, a sacrifice, a run-scoring
ground out by Darrel Chaney
and a run-scoring single by Rod
Gilbreath.
“You can’t make a mistake
against good clubs and not ex
pect them to capitalize on it,”
said Atlanta Manager Dave
Bristol, looking back at the
three-run fourth. “Make no
mistake about it, the Cubs are a
good team. Cardenal has done
that before. He’s good at it.”
Going down the drain for the
Braves was a magnificent
pitching job by Phil Niekro who
pitched the first 11 innings and
left for a pinch batter after
yielding seven hits and striking

Fans based their opinion on 3
things: pitching, hitting and

Pike is strong in all phases of

Jackson.
Anthony Holmes pitched a 3-

While he was taking care of
Jackson’s hitters, his team
mates were backing him with a
7-hit attack that included 4
home runs.
Jake Gamer and Jack Martin
each had a home run and single,
Eddie Burden and Clark
Dickerson homered and Troy
Burden singled.
Marvin Smith had 2 of

Humphrey, who came to At

But Thursday evening, he in

Atlanta, where he has long been
a favorite of the fans.
“I can’t get this fame and
popularity anywhere else,” he
said. “Possibly my best shot is
