Diehl leads golf classic PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Terry Diehl has the first-round lead in the $200,000 Philadelphia Golf Classic, a secret notebook that helped him get there and no intention of revealing his methods. The notebook contains the wit and wisdom of Ken Venturi, a former U.S. Open champion and now a television commentator. “He’s a tremendous guy, and he’s made a world of difference in my game,” Diehl said after his six-under-par 65 gave him a one-stroke edge in Thursday’s opening round of the chase for a $40,000 first prize. Falcons’ Bean has surgery GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The Atlanta Falcons open their exhibition schedule next week against the Cardinals at St. Louis, but running back Bubba Bean will probably be recuper ating in Atlanta. Bean underwent knee surgery Thursday for a cartilage separa tion, suffered when he ran into the helmet of a fallen teammate last Friday. Head Coach Leeman Bennett said the National Football League team’s No. 1 draft pick in 1976 will be out of action for an un determined amount of time. “I’m not going to rush the kid, just let him take his time get ting back,” Bennett said Thursday. He added, however, that he expects Bean to play a role in the 1977 season and that he may even be playing again by the fourth exhibition game. Thursday’s practice was largely uneventful, although halfback Sonny Collins, a likely replacement for Bean, missed the afternoon session because of a pulled groin muscle. On the brighter side, rookie wide receivers Billy Rykman and Mel DeLaura, who have been sidelined with hamstring injuries, practiced for the first time Thursday. Expressway Next To Parkwood “I’m a much better overall player" since working with Venturi, said Diehl, “but he made me vow not to tell any one” precisely the nature of the help. “I think he’s been plagiarized a couple of times,” Diehl said. “If you want to know what it’s all about, ask Venturi.” The instructions, however, are scribbled in the little note book the 27-year-old Diehl stud ies from time to time. “I worked with him several days down in Florida,” said Diehl, whose only victory came in his rookie season of 1974. “The first day, I made notes of 55 items. The second day 27. The third, about a dozen. I kept adding to it.” Diehl, who lost a playoff for this title a year ago, said he sought help from Venturi early this season. “My career was in a valley,” he explained. Since then, he said, “I haven’t missed a cut since Doral (in March) and that’s pretty good for me. I’ve played very steadily, very solidly.” His play over the last 11 holes bordered on the spectacular. He played those holes six under par and used only 12 putts in the stretch, once holing from a bunker. 14-15 Stars play S.C. next Friday The Griffin 14 and 15-Year- Old Babe Ruth All-Stars will not be playing tonight, but will be playing next Friday night in Wilmington, N. C. in the Southeastern Regional Tourna ment. The Griffin team will be playing South Carolina in the first game of the tournament. Griffin won the state tourna ment last week and is the Georgia representative in the Southeastern. Red Sox 12, Brewers 0 Rookie Mike Paxton, a 23- year-old right-hander called up from the minors on May 22, tossed a four-hitter in his second major league start. Jim Rice, Bernie Carbo, Butch Hobson and Denny Doyle backed Paxton with homers in Boston’s victory. Paxton, 4-2, struck out five and walked two. Rice, the Red Sox’ designated hitter, also doubled home a run in Boston’s six-run third inning before leading off the fifth with his league-leading 27th homer of the season. Rick Reuschel, normally a starter, came on in relief and beat Cincinnati 16-15 Thursday. He pitched just two-thirds of an inning and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning. It was his second victory over the Reds in their four-game series and his 10th without a loss at Wrigley Field. The game marked the return to duty after 12 days of reliever Dave Collins and Lee Stanton powered the Mariners past Minnesota. Montague saw his league record-tying string of 33 retired batters end in the eighth when he walked Craig Kusick. Geoff Zahn, 9-8, who lasted just two innings, took the loss. A’s 6, Angels 4 Oakland rookie Mitchell Page drove in two runs and stole his 25th consecutive base to tie a league record in the A’s’ victo ry. Oakland scored one run in each of the first three innings, then added three in the fourth. Page singled to drive in a run in the third and drove in another on an infield out in the fourth. Chicago used 21 players, the Reds 16, and three Cubs changed positions four times. The games were to be played Thursday night in Stock bridge but were postponed because of rain. Pike County was scheduled to play Newnan at 8 p.m. for the district championship and a berth in the state LL tournament at Marietta. Thomaston will play East Coweta in the consolation game beginning at 6 p.m. Pike defeated Thomaston 2-1 Tuesday and Newnan stopped East Coweta 8-3. 13* Year-Old Stars to play Sunday Griffin’s 13-Year-Old Babe Ruth All-Stars will play Sunday afternoon in the state tournament in Newnan. The game scheduled for Thursday afternoon against North Columbus was rained out. A game that began Wednesday afternoon in the tour nament will be completed Saturday afternoon at 3:30. If the Griffin All-Stars win the Sunday afternoon game, they will play Monday night at 8 o’clock for the state championship. If they lose, they will play Monday af ternoon at 5:30. Griffin manager Herb McCarthney said the field in Newnan is very wet and will have to dry out some before any games can be played and that the new schedule is dependent upon the weather. Senior BR Stars play tonight The Griffin Senior Babe Ruth All-Stars and the Newnan Senior Babe Ruth All-Stars will play tonight at 8 o’clock in their series for the state championship. The second game of the best two-of-three series will be 1 played Saturday night at 8 o’clock and the third game, if necessary, will be played Sunday night at 8 o’clock. The series was scheduled to begin Thursday night in Newnan, but had to be rescheduled because of rain. The new schedule is tentative dependent upon the weather, league officials said. Griffin and Newnan are the only 2 teams in the tour nament.
