(AP) — As investigators tried to find what caused a mysterious ex plosion Friday night which demolished an empty syna gogue an hour after regular services, the rabbi discounted any possibility the building was bombed. “There had been no threats, nothing of the kind,” said Rabbi Meir Stimler early today. “I just don’t understand it,” the rabbi added. “I have no idea what caused it. One minute there is a synagogue, then boom—it is no more.” Police said no one was in jured. Eight persons attended the regular worship services, but left about 8 p.m., said Rabbi Stimler, who went home to bed. The rabbi lives in a separate home behind the 19-year-old Beth Sholom Synagogue, and he said he was awakened by the blast about 9 p.m. The explosion blew the syna gogue’s walls into mounds of rubble and scattered debris for a block, shattering several win dows of a nearby motel. Debris rained down on autos and yards within a one-block radius. Hot chickens stop eating, producing ATLANTA (AP) - Some Georgia farmers have lost their appetite for agriculture because of this summer’s crop-withering heat, but the state’s poultry • men are worried because their chickens have almost stopped eating. ' Chickens eat less during ex , treme heat, and “if you can’t get feed into birds, they just ' don’t perform,” according to Georgia Poultry Federation President Edward L. Houston. The result is some reduction in the quantity of eggs and a 7 to 30 per cent general decrease in the size of eggs. Houston said many chickens are laying medium and small eggs instead of large, and that means a loss for poultry men. Houston explained that, at cur rent prices, there is about a 17- cent price difference between large and medium sizes and a 35-cent difference between large and small. In addition, there is less consumer demand for the smaller eggs, he said. The first Prudhoe Bay oil flowed from the 800-mile, $7.7 billion pipeline late Thursday. The Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. said oil was coming in at the rate of 550,000 barrels a day. The marine leg of the pipeline has long been the focus of criticism from state officials, fishermen and environmental ists. It is six-tenths of a mile wide, about 50 miles from Hichen brook Entrance — the gateway into Prince William Sound from the stormy Gulf of Alaska. A state study indicated that a small rock in the Narrows might cause trouble for super tankers. But veteran mariners scoff at concern over the rock, marked by a buoy, and say the channel is much wider than those in many other ports. The channel is so deep, they say, the area should be called “the Deeps,” not the Narrows. Four or five tankers are ex- pected to pass through the Nar rows each day. Other than those giants, vessel traffic near Valdez is limited to small fish ing boats and skiffs carrying sports fishermen. The job of Holmes and the other Coast Guard personnel assigned to Potato Point is to keep the tankers apart. “We can fit 18 supertankers side by side in the narrowest part of the channel,” said Ra darman 2.C. Chris Nettles.
