HEALTH Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. Alcohol and diabetes By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. DEAR DR LAMB - My son has been a diabetic for 15 years, beginning at age 27. There is no family history of diabetes and he has never been overweight He takes a daily injection of insulin. In the early years of his diabetes, he occasionally suf fered insulin shock. In later years, this has happened only infrequently. At times, such as at parties or when with friends, he drinks freely of alcoholic beverages, but never to the point of being intoxicated He says that the consumption of alcoholic beverages is not harmful to his diabetic condi tion. He exercises regularly by jogging, riding a bicycle, play ing basketball and other vigorous activities. He is in good physical condition, but recently has mentioned that he occasionally feels numbness in his extremities. My wife and I are concerned about his frequent use of alcoholic beverages. We think that it may cause some com plications or worsen his diabetic condition We would like your opinion on this matter DEAR READER — In my opinion alcohol and diabetes do not mix. Alcohol affects the way the liver controls blood sugar. A person who has had too much alcohol often has a low blood sugar as a conse quence of this action. Obvious ly then a person taking a regulated amount of insulin may have some changes in in sulin requirements when he uses alcohol A diabetic taking insulin must regulate his life That in cludes food habits, drinking habits and exercise habits. The amount of insulin re quired depends upon these habits as well as periods of psychic stress or any infec tious illness. In addition, a diabetic may develop disease of the liver POLLY'S POINTERS Polly Cramer $4 Acid gets rust off cement POLLY’S PROBLEM DEAR POLLY - Could you suggest a cleaner that would remove rust from a cement step as we have a bad habit of putting our snow shovel on the steps and have had no luck removing it. — MRS. C.L. DEAR MRS. C.L. — If a commercial rust remover has not removed the stains you might try oxalic acid. It could be applied to a cheesecloth poultice and left on for a while. When stain disappears, wash off thoroughly. I always hesitate to recommend such a drastic treatment as this is a POISON and not recommended for use where children or pets may be. Unless the poultice is carefully watched it might be covered with something too heavy for a child or animal to move. — POLLY. DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is with those makers of soap and cleansers who put too much foaming agent in their products. It does not aid in the cleaning process and we have to use more of our precious water to wash these suds away. — BETTY D DEAR POLLY -1 would like to tell the reader who wanted to keep a slate surface clean and shiny that when we had our fireplace put in we were told to use mineral oil on the slate. 1 Just rub it in with a cloth and then wipe off the excess to have ,it clean, shiny and not oily looking. (Polly’s note — Some professionals recommend using linseed oil this same way.) — SUE. DEAR POLLY — I have found creamy toothpaste is ex cellent for cleaning slate table tops, etc. Squeeze some toothpaste on a damp cloth and rub and then wipe off thoroughly with another damp cloth. This also can be used for • cleaning other surfaces such as plastic shoes and purses. — VIVIAN. I do not know what your son means by having numbness in his ex tremities but diabetes will affect the nerves to the legs and sometimes other parts of the body. The best protection against nerve damage of this type is a well-regulated con trol of the blood sugar level. This will not always prevent the complications but most specialists agree that it helps. All things considered I would be inclined to dis courage your son from using alcohol — particularly in anything more than a one drink occasional social affair I think he may also profit from seeing his doctor about the “numbness in his ex tremities". Does that mean that I am in danger of becoming a diabetic? Should I go on a diet or take medication for it? At present I am doing neither. 1 am 76 years old and very active for my age. DEAR READER - The ter minology regarding diabetes varies but about the most you can conclude from that report is that the laboratory studies failed to show that you have diabetes In that case you can pretty much disregard it. The only recommendation I would make to you would be to eliminate any excess body fat that you might have and stay on the lean side.
