Lee Elder leads Hartford Open WETHERSFIELD, Conn. * (AP) — Lee Elder parlayed a putting tip from his wife and “a little change in my swing” into , a one-stroke lead in the first round of the $210,000 Sammy Davis Jr.-Greater Hartford Open Golf Tournament. • “Now I’ve got the lead, the other fellows have to catch me. The double elimination tournament games will be played at Fairmont Park and Dundee Park Fields 1 and 2 tonight. Games Saturday and Sunday will be played at Dundee Park Fields 1 and 2. Saturday’s games will begin at 9 a.m. and Sunday’s games begin at 1 p.m. The Griffin A’s and the Griffin Merchants will be the host teams for the tournament. It is sponsored by the Georgia Parks and Recreation Society. The winner in the Fourth District tournament will represent the district in the state tournament to be played later this month in Milledge ville. Teams to participate in the Fourth District Tournament include Forest Park, Heard 3 golfers in tourney Three Griffin junior golfers will participate in the state tournament at Idlehour Golf Course in Macon. Gary Schenk has qualified in the 14-15 age bracket. Steve Pitts qualified in the 12-13 bracket and Rob Robbins has qualified in the 11 and under bracket. The three reached the state tournament by playing in sectional tournaments spon sored by the Georgia State Junior Golf Association. Each golfer played in 4 tournaments. The Middle Georgia section won the state tournament last year. (AP) - Larron Jackson, a guard who played out his option with the Atlanta Falcons last year, has been traded to the Green Bay Packers for an undisclosed draft pick, the Falcons an nounced Thursday. Right now I’m having a lot of fun because we are winning and I’m within reach of .300. That where I want to be and that’s where I belong. “Last year I was caught up in trying to establish myself as major league material. I’ve done that now, so some of the pressure’s off. Coach Max Dowis’ team will be on the practice field in shorts twice each day in preparation for the first game on Sept. 2 against Central of Macon in Macon. “We have a good number of boys returning from last year’s team. There is enough to form a good nucleus for this year’s team, but we will have a lot of holes to fill,” Coach Dowis said. Coach Dowis said he is ex pecting approximately 55 boys for the varsity squad. After a week of practice in shorts on the home field, the team will attend a week of camp at Indian Springs State Park. The camp will be conducted during the first week the team is allowed in pads. “We have some weaknesses to sew up, but we have some good men to work with. Coach Dowis said the con centration in practice next week and the weeks that follow will be the game with Central of Macon. “It is too early to be talking about playoff games,” he said. The Bears were defeated by Warner Robins last fall for the State AAA championship. Team members have been conditioning this week for the opening of practice, Coach Dowis said. “We will be looking close at the boys to see what talent they have and how we can best develop that talent,” he said. Pirates practice Monday The Pike High School Pirates will begin football training Monday and those boys in terested in playing on the team this year should meet at the gym at 4 p.m. The first full week in pads will be August 15.
