There are army worm infestations in many sections of Spalding and surrounding counties. Parents and educators disagree on how well Johnny should read ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Parents and school administrators disagree on just how well Johnny should read and write when he graduates from high school, according to a survey conducted by graduate students at the University of Georgia College of Education. A majority of parents interviewed in the survey said high school graduates should be able to read and write at the 12th grade level, but most principals and superintendents set the minimum level from two to four grades lower. Among high school students them selves, 43 per cent said graduates should be required to perform at the 12th grade level. The dead were identified as Rufus Eddie Tucker, Jr., 30, of Dobbins Mill road, who drowned in the Flint River Sunday and Roger Edgar Stanfill, 21, of 920 West Taylor street, who was killed in a motorcycle accident early Saturday morning. According to the Spalding Sheriff’s Department, Tucker was fishing with his father, Rufus Eddie Tucker, Sr., and Edward Harper, from a bridge on County Line road off Blanton Mill road about 3:15 Sunday afternoon. Mr. Tucker told lawmen his son said he was hot and was going in the water to cool off. He took off his boots, jumped in, and never came up, the father said. Divers Larry Campbell and Horace Head recovered the body some 10 to 15 feet from the spot where witnesses said he went in. Stanfill died of injuries he suffered when his motorcycle ran a stop sign at North Ninth and Lee streets about 2:20 a.m. Saturday. Gas prices don’t worry ‘Walkin’ Joe SHADY DALE, Ga. (AP) - High gasoline prices don’t bother Joe Howard Gaston. When he wants to go somewhere, he walks. “I gen’ly walk anywhere I go,” he said. “How many miles? I don’t know,” he said in an interview. “In my life...wish you could see how far I’ve walked from the time I came in the world.” A neighbor recalled when Walkin’ Joe bought a power saw from a store in Macon and later found it wouldn’t start. “So he put it on his shoulder and walked to Macon to return it for repairs,” the neighbor said. Macon is 49 miles from this tiny central Georgia town in Jasper County. Another man recalled when Gaston, laid off from his job, walked to Atlanta to tell then Gov. Three people were injured in a collision Sunday afternoon at North Ninth and Quilley streets. Treated at the Griffin hospital were Margaret Wall, of 1033 High Falls road, one of the drivers; Deborah Rollins, 314 North 14th street, and Lisa Bishop, 4, of Route 6, Box 379-A, passengers in the other vehicle. It was driven by Tim Rollins, also of the North 14th street address, police said. Four people were injured in a wreck Saturday morning at West Solomon and 14th streets. Treated at the Griffin hospital were Larry G. Tyus, 21, of West Wall street, and his passengers, Mrs. Mary Frances Tyus and Mary Pittman, both of West Wall.
