Nudist colony hits another court snag A petition to close the Garden of Eden nudist camp in Henry County was to come before superior court in McDonough for a third time today. The petition seeks to close the camp as a public nusicance. The latest legal snag hap pened when Larry Thomason, attorney for camp owner and operator Francis Gilmere, said the charges were not served properly. Thomason, a well known Atlanta area political figure, said the complaint should have been served in DeKalb County where Gilmere lives instead of Henry where the nudist facility is located. Judge Sam Whitmire said the issue should be resolved before testimony on the petition is heard. He asked Thomason to prepare a brief. District Attorney Ed McGarity contended the court notices were properly served, since the nudist colony is in Henry County. Weekdays-7:09 - 9:00 P.M. Sunday-5:16-7:09&9:00P.M. Women inmate report exagerated, officials say ATLANTA (AP) — A report of widespread use of tranquil izers by women inmates of Georgia prisons is exaggerated and does not reflect current statistics, state officials said Monday. The study, called the Califor nia Youth Project, was financed by a $293,025 grant from the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, and included statistics from 16 prisons and 46 jails in 1975 and 1976. The report said 30 to 39 per cent of the inmates at the Geor gia Rehabilitation Center for Women at Milledgeville re ceived tranquilizers and 50 per cent of the women in the DeKalb County Jail received tran quilizers and mood elevators. David C. Evans, commission er of offender rehabilitation in Georgia, said in a statement that 21 per cent of the 398 female offenders at Milledgeville are under some type of tranquilizer or mood elevator. He also said, “It’s a known fact that females seek out more medical care and have more medical problems than the male.” Dr. Charles Allard, staff phy sician at the DeKalb jail, said the number of women taking mood elevators at that facility probably was something less than 10 per cent. Drugs prescribed for depres sion are usually limited to Mel laril and Adapin, mood eleva tors regarded as weaker than Z* J Phone 227-1331 We Can Make (Duplicate) The Glasses You Are Wearing In Any Style And Color, At A Price You’ll Be Pleased With. The study said, “Such wide spread use of tranquilizers and mood elevators is probably re lated to the stresses of in stitutional life although not clearly justified by data on in mates’ medical problems. “One can only speculate on the impact of such long-term medication upon physical and mental functioning of inmates and the impact of psychological dependence on such drugs among inmates released from institutions and expected to as sume a responsible self-di rected role in society.” No date yet on seminar The Georgia House Industrial Relations Committee will hold seminars throughout the state on changes in the unem ployment compensation law and other related matters. Griffin is scheduled to hold a seminar but no date has been set. City, county, and state em ployees will be brought under the unemployment com pensation law in 1978.
