— Griffin Daily News Thursday, August 11,1977 Page 10 Wholesale prices decline By MICHAEL DOAN Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Wholesale prices declined for the second month in row in July as farm and processed food prices kept dropping, the Labor Department said today. The decline of one-tenth of a per cent in the wholesale price index was not so big as the sev en-tenths decrease the month before. But it marked the first two-month drop since winter, 1975. Wholesale price changes usu ally show up at the consumer level eventually, but so far gro cery store food prices have con tinued going up. They rose eight-tenths of a per cent in the latest consumer report in June. Recalled butter under going tests By MANUEL SCHIFFRES Associated Press Writer LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Two samples of butter produced by Beatrice Foods Co., which has recalled all whipped butter manufactured at its Sugar Creek plant here, did not con tain enough bacteria to cause food poisoning, a Kentucky health official says. Tests on nine other samples of the butter, suspected of causing eight cases of food poisoning in Kentucky and dozens of others in Illinois and Missouri, should be completed today, said Dr. George Kilgore of the Kentucky Bureau of Health Services. Beatrice Foods, based in Chi cago, announced Saturday that it was recalling shipments of butter that had certain code numbers and “pull dates.” It expanded the recall on Tuesday to include all whipped butter manufactured at the Louisville plant. Company spokesman Neil Gazel said the recall was ex panded “because we wanted to be absolutely certain and not take any chances.” Illinois health authorities say 24 persons were stricken in Pe oria on Friday and 13 in Champaign, as well as smaller I ' w A H* ' Ray Jimmerson Announcement was made today that Ray Jimmerson had been chosen as Salesman of the Month for July, 1977 at Randall & Blakely, Ford Dealers The winning of this award by Ray was made possible through his close attention to the desires of his customers, and the follow-up procedures after the sale. In the last three months, farm prices have dropped 10.6 per cent, on a sea sonally adjusted basis. Contributing more to the July decline, however, were process ed foods and feeds, such as vegetable oils, animal fats and sugar. They dropped 2.4 per cent after a 1.7 per cent decline the month before. Prices of industrial com modities went up one-half of a per cent after seasonal adjust ment, after a rise of three tenths of a per cent in June. The two-month decline in the over-all index followed nine consecutive months of price in- numbers in Springfield and Belleville. In Kentucky, officials say they have received six reports of food poisoning from Bowling Green and two from Lexington. And the butter is the suspected cause of more than 20 illnesses in Missouri. Health officials say the butter may have carried infection causing staphylococcal bac teria. Both the company and the U.S. Food and Drug Admin istration also are running tests on the butter, which is market ed in 19 states under a number of brand names. Kilgore, who is heading Ken tucky’s analysis of the sus pected samples, said “we did not find any high levels of staph” in the first two samples. He added by telephone from his home in Lexington, Ky. that he didn't think those samples were directly associated with food poisoning complaints. Despite the negative results on the first two samples, the butter may still turn out to be tainted, Kilgore stressed. Among brands Beatrice Food says it has recalled are Sugar Creek, Prairie Farm, A&P, Ar mour, Chappel, Mayflower, Blue Valley and Meadow Gold marketed in eight-ounce cups in the states of Alabama, Ten nessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ken tucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. As an added precaution, the company said, the expanded or der includes eight-ounce cups of Lucerne whipped butter mar keted in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ten nessee and Texas; Coleman whipped butter in Arkansas and Oklahoma, and Kountry Fresh whipped butter in Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. The company said the order also included five-pound tubs of Meadow Gold and Sugar Creek whipped butter marketed in Florida, Georgia, lowa, North Carolina and Virginia. Such tubs are sold to restaurants and other food services. Trucks collide, man killed WACO, Ga. The last back-to-back decline in prices was a half a per cent drop in February 1975, and a four-tenths of a per cent drop the following month. The July report was good news for administration econo mists, who are counting on in flation to slow a bit in the second half of the year. However, farm prices are volatile, and most other categories showed slight increases. The price indexes for lumber and wood products and for ma chinery and equipment rose more than in June. Prices also turned up for metals, hides, skins and textiles after declines the previous month. Wholesale prices declined for chemicals, furniture and household goods after increasing in June. The biggest contributer to a 1 per cent rise in metals prices was steel and aluminum pur chases. Many industries bought steel before July anticipating the price increases announced -j-:■ .M jsr flu " *3l 1Z > Bl K- K V * ill - w*- • YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Gardner family of Salem, Oregon wheeled into Ypsilanti last Saturday after riding their bicycles on the scenic but rugged route from Oregon to Michigan, traveling along the Snake river, through the MA(iN IFICKNT SPANISH! 3 Pieces SRQQ9S 3 -Aife-A Sofa and 2 Chairs, for only VV W ■ jgrA feagw a T iM^aPgy, 12 ■ t Ila ■MT W lol I \3 ; > jkdk *W yU uH ■ I BL jfflf UpETr MLJPteL f>\MB ? Among farm products, hay, hayseeds and oilseeds dropped the most in July, falling in price by 25.8 per cent. Other big drops were shown by grains, 3.6 per cent; live poultry, 5.5 per cent, and fibers, 2 per cent. Leading the processed foods decline are crude vegetable oil, which plunged 31.2 per cent in price; animal fats and oils, 17.8 per cent, and animal feeds, 15 per cent. Fuel prices rose two-tenths of a per cent while chemical prod ucts were down three-tenths of a per cent and rubber and plastic products were unchanged. Lumber and wood products rose 4.2 per cent, led by the 6 per cent increase in lumber and a 6.4 per cent jump in plywood. Over-all, the wholesale price index stood at 194.8, meaning that goods bought at wholesale for SIOO in 1967 now cost $194.80. That was 5.6 per cent higher than a year earlier. Oregon to Michigan on bikes A White House spokesman said after the June wholesale report that price increases dur ing the second half of the year are likely to be more moderate than the first half. He said the farm price decline “should be affecting consumer food prices in the months ahead and this will bring welcome relief for consumer food budgets.” Retail prices rose at a 10 per cent annual rate the first four months of the year, but the ad ministration says they should decline to a rate of 6 per cent near the end of the year. In another goverment report Wednesday, the Commerce De partment said consumers in creased their spending at retail stores by 1 per cent in July after slight reductions the previous two months. Total retail sales for the month were estimated at $68.7 billon after adjustment for seasonal and daily variations but not for price changes. Rockies and over the Black Hills.
