Scientists with the National Institutes of Health announced- Wednesday a new experimental drug, adenine arabinoside, has been used successfully to treat a rare virus-caused brain dis ease. Manufactured by the Parke- Davis pharmaceutical company of Detroit, the unpatented drug, also known as ara-A, was ad ministered to 28 hospital patients suffering from herpes encephalitis, a disease that de stroys brain cells. Dr. Charles A. Alfred Jr. of the University of Alabama, who coordinated the NIH-sponsored tests at 15 medical centers, said they showed that ara-A reduced Dog hero of cops-robbers chase ASHBURN, Ga. (AP) — An 11-year-old bulldog named Henry was the hero of a cops-and-robbers drama that began with the attempted robbery of a sefvice station and covered two south Georgia counties Wednesday. Two Florida men were arrested after a bullet-punc tuated, 110-mile-an-hour chase in which the windshields were shot out of two police cars. No injuries were reported. Witnesses gave this account: Two men, one armed with a sawed-off shotgun and the second with a pistol, walked into a Turner County service station owned by Henry’s master. “Henry,” shouted night manager Hubert Nipper. The 100-pound pit bulldog, trained to attack on com mand, lunged at the man with the shotgun and sent him sprawling. The gunmen ran to a car and sped away. Henry retreated to his favorite corner while Nipper called Ashburn police, who spotted the car headed north on Georgia 159. “They (the holdup men) were shooting at the Ashburn Vance concluding peace mission DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Secretary of State Cyrus R. Drug treats virus-caused diseases herpes encephalitis mortality from 70 per cent to 28 per cent. The virus that causes the dis ease is a member of the same herpes family that causes chickenpox, shingles, fever blisters and the venereal disease, genital herpes. The many infectious diseases that attack humans are caused mainly by two kinds of germs: bacteria and viruses. The dis covery of pencillin in 1928 led to the development of antibiotics that have been used suc cessfully to treat most bacteria related diseases. But viruses have remained resistant to these and other drugs. Until the development of ara-A doctors have able to treat only the symptoms of viral diseases, not the diseases themselves, and had to hope the body would successfully resist the virus on its own. If ara-A can be used success- rived here from Jordan today on the second leg of a fastpaced, one-day swing through Arab capitals to brief officials on his talks with Israeli leaders. Vance set out this morning from Israel and flew 60 miles east to Amman, Jordan, to con fer with King Hussein. His U.S. Air Force jet then hopped 110 miles northeast to Damascus, where Vance briefed Syrian President Hafez Assad. The secretary’s final Middle Eastern stop is Alexandria, 400 miles southwest of Damascus, where he was to meet with Egyptian President Anwar Sa- fully in the treatment of herpes encephalitis, there is reason to believe it can fight off numerous other virus-caused diseases, such as the common cold and influenza, scientists said. Herpes encephalitis, which is difficult to diagnose, is believed to strike thousands of Ameri cans each year, with only one in 10 victims making a full re covery. Most survivors suffer serious brain damage, and many remain incapacitated for life. “This is exciting news,” said Dr. Richard Krause of the NlH’s National Institute of Al lergy and Infectious Diseases of the new test results. “It is the first successful treatment of a serious and life threatening virus disease. It opens up an avenue to a new form of therapy for this class of infections.” Alfred said the drug also has car,” said state trooper E.R. Connell, who joined the chase. “I passed it, and they opened up on me. They fired five shotgun blasts at me. Three charges of buckshot hit my car, and one smashed the windshield. “We were hitting 110 (miles an hour) up Georgia 159. They turned right on Georgia 90 to Rebecca and then left on Georgia 233 to Rochelle in Wilcox County,” he said. Connell said the car stopped in Rochelle and both men fired at him again before running into the woods. Bloodhounds and a helicopter were brought, and two men were arrested a short time later. Police said the men — identified as Bruce Williams, 21, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Freddie Lee Allen, 18, of Safety Harbor, Fla. — were charged in Wilcox County with aggravated battery and possessing stolen property. They said the two also will be charged in Turner County with aggravated battery and attempted robbery. As for Henry, he sprawled in his corner and gnawed a bone. dat. Vance is due in London tonight. Vance dispatched Alfred Atherton, assistant secretary of state for Middle Eastern af fairs, to Saudi Arabia to brief leaders there. Vance went to Saudi Arabia during the initial swing of his mission last week. An official traveling with Vance denied an Israeli news paper report that the U.S. am bassador to Egypt has met se cretly with a representative of the Palestine Liberation Organ ization. “There have been no meet ings, at no place, at no time,” the official said. Vance indicated Wednesday that Arab governments have moved closer to meeting Is rael’s demand for ultimate nor malization of Arab-Israeli rela tions. But, he said at a news conference, “in the discussions here in Israel, we did not nar row the gap any further.” “We have found that in some cases what appeared to be irre concilable differences have dis appeared,” Vance said. “But fundamental differences remain ... on key issues” in volving both the substance of the Mideast dispute and methods for resuming peace talks. Vance said he would act as go between next month in talks in New York between the foreign ministers of Israel and the Arab states, who are scheduled to attend the U.N. General As sembly’s fall session. been used successfully in con trolled tests to fight chickenpox and shingles in cancer patients and is being used by physicians in treating runaway herpes in fections in cancer and trans plant patients whose normal re sistance to disease has been weakened by drug therapy. But he cautioned that it is too early to predict successful use of ara-A against herpes dis eases or other viral infections on which it has not yet been tested. At present, ara-A is effective against serious diseases only when administered in travenously and must be given in a hospital. As a result, the drug is not likely to be used for some time to treat non-life threatening infections such as genital herpes and fever blis ters in otherwise normal patients, officials say. Vance will shuttle proposals between the Arab and Israeli delegations in an effort to re concile differences and allow a reconvening of peace talks in Geneva by the end of the year. Prime Minister Menahem Be gin said his talks with Vance duplicated discussions in Wash ington last month with Presi dent Carter. "There is no rea son to change... I think we took a very positive attitude,” Begin told reporters. New drug attacks viral infections BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - University of Alabama in Bir mingham scientists reported a significant breakthrough Wednesday in the battle against viral infections. UAB research, with major contributions from Southern Research Institute, showed that a drug called “ara-A" can be used in humans to treat a dead ly viral disease known as “her pes simplex encephalitis.” Herpes encephalitis is an in flammation involving both the brain and the spinal cord. Scientists said until now drugs have not been effective in treating viral infections. One UAB researcher said in his opinion this is the most signifi cant breakthrough to date in drug treatment of viral in fections. “We are so excited about this and hope this project will pave the way for much more re search and development in the viral field, in much the same way that penicillin opened the door for work in the area of bacterial infections,” said Dr. Charles A. Alford of UAB. Alford and Dr. Richard J. Whitley coordinated UAB’s re search on the project. Whitley and Alford empha sized that the great benefit of the research is not only to show what the drug can do to fight herpes encephalitis, but also to show that a drug indeed can at tack a viral infection success fully. Herpes encephalitis kills 70 per cent of its victims and in flicts severe brain damage on most survivors, doctors said. i *• I -I * w fl w life f /^Bh Bf > W Ur J a ■WSMF Elizabeth Taylor and her husband John Warner talk to Republican party supporters at a SSO-a-plate dinner held Wednesday night in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre.
