Thousands of acres at stake
in Ga., S.C. border dispute
ATLANTA (AP) — Thou
sands of acres of land and water
bottom are at stake as Georgia
takes its border dispute with
South Carolina to the U.S.
Supreme Court.
A petition filed Wednesday by
Georgia Atty. Gen. Arthur K.
Bolton said all attempts to settle
the matter out of court hath
failed and asked the high court
to assume jurisdiction.
Property rights and law en
forcement powers in the dis
puted area will remain unclear
until the boundary is finally de
termined, the petition said, ask
ing the court to uphold Geor
gia’s claims.
At stake are 10,000 acres of
water and water bottom and
more than 3,000 acres of high
ground and marshland that
each state claims.
3 charged in rape
PERRY, Ga. (AP) — Three Warner Robins men were
being held in the Houston County Jail without bond today
after being indicted in the rape and murder of a Warner
Robins teenager.
Authorities said Bill Durham, 24, and Roger Collins, 18,
were charged Wednesday with murder and rape, and
Johnny C. Styles, 23, was charged with rape.
They are accused of attacking Lois Lester, 18, whose
nude body was found Sunday in a pecan orchard. She had
been beaten with an automobile jack, authorities said.
No hearing date has been set.
Killed in accident
DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — Daniel L. Hogsette, 66, of
Decatur, was killed Wednesday in an automobile accident
on the Stone Mountain Freeway near Atlanta, police said.
He died when his car struck a bridge abutment, police
said.
Funeral for judge
WINDER, Ga. (AP) — Funeral services are scheduled
Friday for Ruth Hosch, who died Wednesday after serving
12% years as Barrow County probate judge.
Miss Hosch, 65, a native of Winder, stepped down from
the post in May due to illness. She had served as a clerk
under former Ordinary John Robert Austin, now Barrow
County sheriff.
In 1974, the Georgia Legislature changed the name of
the office from ordinary to judge of probate.

Both states claim Barnwell
Island, a prime site for port and
industrial development.
The dispute affects enforce
ment of commercial fishing
laws and could have a bearing
on off-shore drilling rights con
trolled by the states.
Georgia contends the Treaty
of Beaufort, S.C., approved by
both states in 1787, sets the
boundary line at the middle of
the Savannah River, and gave
all islands in the river to Geor
gia.
Although the course of the
river has changed, Georgia.
says the original line holds be
cause the changes were caused
by dredging, rather than natu
ral action.
South Carolina claims the
boundary follows the river,
wherever it flows.
The suit “will expedite a final
resolution of the long-standing
dispute between Georgia and
South Carolina,” Gov. George
Busbee of Georgia said.
A spokesman for South Caro
lina Gov. James B. Edwards,
currently in South Africa, said,
“the governor is confident of
South Carolina’s position in this
matter and... we can assure the
citizens that every resource of
the state will be used to support
the interests of South Carolina
and her citizens.”
A shortage of shrimp has
made Georgia officials touchy
about the boundary.
Georgia authorities arrested
a South Carolina man last June
on charges of shrimping in
closed waters, but the man es
caped and South Carolina’s

NEW YORK (AP) - United
Artists has announced the up
coming filming of “Hair,” one
of the most popular musicals of
the 19605, under the direction of
Academy Award-winning direc
tor Milos Forman.
Filming of the musical by Je
rome Ragni, James Rado and
Galt Mac Dermot will be on
various Midwestern and New
York locations. The screenplay
for the film was written by Mi
chael Weller.
“Hair” opened on April 29,
1968, at the Biltmore Theater
and continued its smash Broad
way run through July 1972.
Nineteen companies produced
the musical around the world.
There were a. total of 2,000
recordings,
