Goldstein reports
credit ‘snafus’
City Commissioner Louis
Goldstein said he continues to
receive “many, many calls”
from city and county residents
concerning collection methods
used at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital.
He said he has documented
several examples of the
“massive credit confusion
plaguing our community.”
One was a letter to G. M.
Jones of Route 3, Box 412, from
an Atlanta collection agency
threatening him for not paying
a sls account for a patient,
Michael Jones. Jones claims he
does not owe the bill, Goldstein
said.
The letter states that since
Jones has “chosen to ignore our
request for payment, we are
ordering a complete in
vestigation into your em
ployment, bank account,
automobile, and any real or
personal property you may
own.
“This investigation will start
in 5 days. In order to avoid any
embarrassment and additional
cost to you, send the balance in
full before the fifth day,” the
letter states.
Goldstein questioned how
anyone could investigate a
person’s private bank account.
Bank of Griffin President
Jerry Savage, who also serves
on the hospital board, termed
the letter an “idle threat.”
“Our bank would not talk to
any collection agency about an
account here. That’s con
fidential,” he said.
Before the Internal Revenue
Service can see an account, it
must have either written per
mission from the person or
must have a subpoena, he said.
The Credit Bureau of Griffin
does not handle collections,
according to a spokesman
there. The bank gives no figures
on a checking account but can
reply “yes” or “no” as to if the
Mr. Watkins

Mrs. Onie Smith, 4 daughters,
Mrs. Louise Miller of Detroit,
Mich., Mrs. Betty Joseph, Mrs.

and John Lewis Smith, all of
Griffin, 3 sisters, Mrs. Addie
Mae Darden and Mrs. Annie
Laura Rucker, both of Griffin,
Mrs. Connie Mae Holloway of
Columbus, Ohio, an aunt, Mrs.
Leoma Holland of Griffin.
Miller’s Funeral Home will
announce plans.
Mrs. McCoy
Mrs. Annie Lois McCarter
McCoy, 80, widow of Mr. B.
McCoy of 1750 Old Zebulon road,
Barnesville, died Saturday
afternoon at her residence after
a long illness.
She was a native of Harris
County and a member of the
Calvary Baptist Church of
Barnesville.
Survivors include one
daughter, Mrs. Irene Jackson of
Barnesville; 3 sisters, Mrs.
Georgia Chapman of Woodbury,
Mrs. Mary Smith of Man
chester, Mrs. Hazel Ham of
Pasadena, Texas, and one
brother, Marshall McCarter of
Talbotton.
The funeral will be conducted
this afternoon at 2 o’clock from
the Calvary Baptist Church.
The Rev. H. L. Sheffield and the
Rev. Wiley Virden will officiate.

wood cemetery. Haisten

Vegas.
An evening out also included a
Broadway-like presentation by geisha
girls as they acted out the bridal affair.
The Sigmans returned to the con
tinental states via Hawaii where they
spent 4 days on the main island.
“You can’t describe it, its just so
scenic,’’ Mrs. Sigman said.
account is satisfactory or if it
has a record of insufficient
funds, the spokesman said.
Savage said he has not seen
the letter but he was aware that
some hospital accounts have
been turned over to a collection
agency.
“I think it (the letter) is an
idle threat. It’s not in good taste
and sounds pretty harsh to me,”
he commented.
Another example,
documented by Goldstein,
concerned Mr. C. L. Thompson,
who was confined to the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital about a year
and a half ago, in January, 1976,
with a total hospital bill of
$1,743.60.
He had 2 insurance policies.
Mutual of Omaha which paid
the hospital $1,192.80, and
Liberty National which paid
$892, making a total of $2,084 or
an overpayment of $341.20,
Goldstein said.
Yet, 18 months later, on July
2, Mr. Thompson received a bill
from the hospital stating he
owed $251.85. When Thompson
questioned this, hospital em
ployes immediately marked the
bill “paid in full,” Goldstein
said.
When Thompson asked where
the $341.20 was, he was told it
had been sent back to the in
surance company. Neither
insurance company has advised
Mr. Thompson they received it,
Goldstein continued.
Even though the hospital
owes Thompson money, he
received a letter dated Aug. 2
from the Southeastern Credit
Corp., a collecting agency for
the hospital, threatening fur
ther action unless he paid $11.50
within 5 days. Goldstein said he
paid that just to avoid further
harassment.
“I wonder how many others
have done the same thing,”
Goldstein asked.
A third example, Goldstein
said he has documented, con
cerns Mr. Earl Lewis who was
billed for an emergency room
visit he said he did not make.
Lewis’ son’s leg was broken
on July 21 in a mini-bike ac
cident.
He was carried to the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital emergency
room and after being x-rayed,
was transferred to Piedmont
Hospital in Atlanta where the
leg was set, Goldstein said.
According to Goldstein, Lewis
“emphatically states” there
was only 1 visit to the hospital
on July 21. But he has received
bills for 2 visits — $32 for a July
9 visit Lewis claims was not
made and $47.88 for the July 21
visit, Goldstein said.
Goldstein said he is receiving
many calls about the collection
methods and the hospital’s
“seemingly indifference to the
problems of individuals when
they go to the hospital or call to
inquire about their bills or
letters they receive.”
“No one attempts to help
these people. . . not even the
$69,000 per year ad
ministrators,” he said.
“It’s difficult for me to see
how the hospital authority can
sit back and apparently con
done such management,”
Goldstein said.

LAKELAND, Ga. (AP) - The
Lanier County grand jury
convenes today and is expected
to hear evidence against two
men accused in the slaying of
Ray City Police Chief Ed Gid
dens.
Murder charges have been
filed against 21-year-old Henry
Willis and Larry Donnell Flem
ing, 19, both of Moultrie, Ga.
However, previous indictments
were thrown out in June by Su
perior Court Judge John S.
Langford.
Langford’s order questioned
the composition of the grand
jury which indicted three men
in the slaying.
Son H. Fleming, 45, of Roch
elle, Ga., uncle of Larry Flem
ing, was convicted of murder
last February and sentenced to
death by Superior Court Judge
H. W. Lott.
Authorities said Giddens had
stopped three men for speeding,
not aware that a robbery of a
convenience store in Adel had
taken place shortly before.
Giddens’ body was found in a
swamp between Ray City and
Lakeland
