(AP) - Jack Nicklaus, golf’s “bridesmaid.” Can’t you see it in the headlines now? Another major championship lost by the margin of a gnat’s eyebrow — his third this year. Hasn't won a major now in 24 months. Thirty-seven years old. Maybe some of the old zing is gone, eh? Where’s that old knockout punch? Remember Ben Hogan? What happened to Arnold Palmer? Poor Jack. Yeah, poor Jack. He needs your sympathy about as much as the Rockefellers do. Or the sheiks of Araby. Throw no charity bazaars for the Golden Bear. No tin cups on the street corners, please. Forget those solicitations for aid. Vultures may be winging overhead, but they may die of starvation or boredom if they plan to wait for Jack Nicklaus’ bones to be picked. Young Lanny Wadkins, 27, is the new PGA champion but Nicklaus remains king of the pros. Even Tom Watson, the brightest star of 1977, acknowledges it openly. Butch Dixon and Paula Westmoreland were the two local trophy division winners in competition during the Middle Georgia Open Tennis Tour nament which ended Sunday at City Park. This year’s tournament en tertained more players in every age group than in any previous year. Paula Westmoreland defeated Gloria Bernard 6-2, 6-0 to capture the women’s singles and Miss Westmoreland teamed with Butch Dixon to take the mixed doubles finals over Jim Thaxton and Sherry Stillmon 6- 2, 7-5. In perhaps the most contested events of the tournament, Robin Merriman won the men’s singles by defeating Butch Dixon in the semi-finals and Ricky Peacock of Thomaston in the finals 6-2, 6-3. The upset of the day came in the men’s doubles when David Haynie and Gary Wood defeated Bruce Cabot and Robin Merriman’s top-seeded team 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in the 2Mi hour duel. Robin Merriman began to tire in the third set which made the difference in the match. Merriman had won the men’s singles earlier in the day. In the women’s doubles ac tion, Ora Jackson and Jean Peterson defeated Neva Yar brough and Sally Stith 6-4, 6-2. All were from College Park. The Middle Georgia Tour nament was sponsored by the Griffin Recreation Department and was directed by Sonny Shockley. A weekend Labor Day Doubles Tournament is being planned. Interested doubles may sign up for the competition at the Recreation Department. “He is the master,” says Watson, who barely beat out Nicklaus for the Masters and British Open titles this year. “Ten years from now, maybe I can claim it, maybe somebody else can. But it’s a recognition that can only be carved out over a great number of years — as Jack has done.” Nicklaus’ third place finish in the PGA here, one shot back of Wadkins and 47-year-old Gene Littler, earned him $15,000 and pushed his 1977 prize collection to $265,812, within easy reach of Watson’s leading $281,478. Jack has led the money-winning list eight of his 15 years as a pro. He has soared over $3 million in official money, almost twice that of his closest pursuer. Besides his 63 tour victories, 79 world-wide and 14 major pro cham pionships, his 1-2-3 record in the major tournaments is phenomenal. He has 15 seconds and nine thirds, meaning that with a tricky bounce here and there Nicklaus could have amassed 25 or more major crowns. “Each time I come close and don’t win, it hurts me,” Nicklaus said after surging from six shots back of the front-running Littler with nine holes to play to pull even going to the next-to-last hole. “I was in a position to take it,” Jack added. “Naturally I was disappointed. Chipping at the 17th, I aimed at the crown of the hump and thought I hit a perfect shot. The ball jumped to the right. That’s what hurt me. “There will come a some time when it will happen to me,” Jack said, assessing the rust of age. Braves fall 1-0 Dodger manager, credits pitching LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Manager Tom Lasorda has been saying since spring training that he wouldn’t trade his pitching staff for any other in baseball. “We have the best five start ers you can have,” said the op timistic Dodgers’ manager. Over the last nine games, the last two of which have been shutouts, Lasorda’s words have more than been borne out. Doug Rau hurled a four-hit, 1-0 shutout over the Atlanta Braves Sunday, after Tommy John had blanked the same club the night before 11-0. The Dodgers’ staff earned run average is now 3.28, best in the major leagues. “On a team that’s as far ahead as we are, everytime you go out there you want to pitch as well or better as the man in front of you," said Rau, now 13- 3. “It felt good to pitch a strong game today, but you can see what I’m up against, following somebody like Tommy John.” John leads the Dodger start ers with 14 victories, Rau and Rick Rhoden each have 13, Don Sutton has 10 and Burt Hooton has nine. Rhoden, 13-7, will start tonight against the San Fra nisco Giants’ Ed Halicki, 9-9 in the opener of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. I’m a much better pitcher when I’ve got a big lead.” Rau said before the game that he had a stiff neck and felt bad wanning up. “Then suddenly everything came together,” he said. “I’ve never hit so many spots in my life.” Rau lowered his earned run average to 3.41 with his second shutout of the season and the ninth registered by the Dodg ers’ staff. “I must have started 20 games in my career with a stiff neck,” said Rau. “I’ve never done too well until today.” The Dodger left-hander re tired the first eight Braves in order, then gave up a double to Niekro for the first hit.
