Carmicha®! house needs little introduc tion because just about everybody has seen the large, rambling house on McDonough Road across from where 2nd Street ends. Since it was restored by Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael in the early 19705, the house has received both acclaim and publicity arjd has become a landmark for the city of Jackson. Now the house at 149 McDonough Road has been included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Carmichaels received the news earlier this month from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that the house was entered on the National Register as of Major earthquake reported on Sumba Isle in Indonesia HONOLULU (AP) - A major earthquake occurred Friday in the vicinity of Sumba Island in Indonesia, according to the In ternational Tsunami Informa tion Center’s Observatory here. In order to be listed in the national register, the resi dence first of all had to have its nomination approved by the Georgia National Regis ter Review Board. The nomination was approved earlier this year. The Carmichael House was then nominated for a listing on the National Register. According to DNR, this list is one of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects significant in Ameri can history, architecture, archaeology and culture. In addition, if property is listed on the National Register, the property is provided recognition as a place worthy of preservation as well as a degree of protection from federal pro- observatory spokesman said. There was no evidence that a Pacific-wide tsunami, or tidal wave, was generated, although there may have been a local wave, the spokesman said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at jects which might destroy its historical integrity. “Worthy of preservation” is a phrase which aptly describes the Carmichael House. Rated in “excellent” condi tion by the DNR, the 12-room mansion was built in 1898 at an incredible cost of about $16,000. Almost all of the sitting rooms and bedrooms have a fireplace each with different tile around the opening of the fireplaces and each with different “classically in spired” mantels. Some of the fireplaces are particularly elaborate such as the dining room fireplace whose opening is flanked with pink gloss tile and the mantel consists of double columns and a simple arch 1:09 p.m. local time, 2:09 a.m. EDT, near the Sumbawa and Sumba islands in the south eastern part of Indonesia. It said preliminary readings placed the center of the quake at 10.35 degrees south latitude and 118.54 degrees east longi tude. A survey spokesman said the center of the quake was “not far from the center of a magnitude 6.5 earthquake on July 14, 1976 near the island of Bali that claimed 563 lives and injured 2,300 people.” The Richter Scale is a meas ure of ground motion as record ed on seismographs. Every in crease of one number means a tenfold increase in magnitude. An earthquake of 3.5 on the Richter scale can cause slight damage in the local area, 4 moderate damage, 5 consider able damage, 6 severe damage. The house contains a great deal of stained glass used as windows or smaller windows above larger ones or above doors. One of the most interesting pieces of stained glass in the house is a curving double window in the second floor foyer. This window is situated so as to allow light to fall into the oval opening in the floor between the first and second floor foyers. No alterations of major proportions have been made to the house. A back porch was enclosed with glass when the restoration was begun, but generally the exterior has not been altered substan tially. quake, capable of tremendous damage. Going too well OSLO, Norway (AP) — They should have known it was going too well. When three burglars broke into the office of the Ryfoss concrete company’s office in Vang last weekend, they found the company safe right away. They put together a small dynamite charge to blow it open, lit the fuse and con fidently rushed into the next room. The explosion which followed did not just open the vault, it brought down the walls of the factory. As it turned out, the safe was loaded with dynamite rather than cash. According to the Oslo daily newspaper Verdens Gang, one burglar was severely injured and was brought to a hospital by his comrades. ; " H] 11IJ! He’s been confined to a wheelchair for nearly 30 years, but can do everything an able-bodied man can do—except walk. Now for my pet peeve: When we are in a restaurant, a well-meaning but thoughtless waitress invariably turns to me .and asks, "And what will HE have?” This has happened to me so often that I now have a standard reply: “He is perfectly capable of telling you. Why don’t you ask him?” Abby, it is amazing the number of people who assume that because someone is in a wheelchair, he is completely helpless and unable to communicate. Please print my letter. It might wake up some folks who think a physically handicapped person can neither think nor speak for himself. Thank you! FED UP DEAR FED UP: Your message is an important one. And while we’re on the subject of showing consideration for the physically handicapped, when you are speaking to someone in a wheelchair for more than a minute, please draw up a chair and sit down so that you will both be on the same eye level. Forcing him to look up at you gives him a pain in the neck. Literally! DEAR ABBY: I’m an orchestra director who frequently gets requests to play a number in honor of a wedding anniversary. I always get a laugh when on the occasion of the first wedding anniversary I play, "Night and Day.” For the fifth anniversary, I play, “Saturday Night.” For the 10th anniversary, I play, “Once in a While,” ’ For the 25th anniversary, I play, "Now and Then.” And for the 50th anniversary, I play, “Thanks For the Memories.” What do you suggest for anniversaries over 50: OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS DEAR OPEN: How about, “We Did It Before and We Can Do It Again?” DEAR ABBY: The letter from HAD, who ordered and paid $5 for “grass” and in return received lawn clippings, was hilarious. It reminded me of another ad, years ago, to “Send $1 for the secret of success.” Those responding received a fishhook with the advice, “Catch suckers like we do.” CONVULSED CONFIDENTIAL TO ALICE: Don’t marry a drinking man. A man who won’t stay sober for his sweetheart would never stay sober for his wife. Everyone has a problem. What’s yours? For a personal reply, write to ABBY: Box No. 69700, L.A., Calif. 90069. Long bean Robert Flournoy of 215 Carver road has a 26-inch string bean and It’s still growing. A friend gave Flournoy six seeds which came from Florida for the bean which will attain up to 36 inches. “I believe it will get it, too,” Flournoy said. He plans to save this year’s seeds and plant more next year for the crop of beans which is comparable to the Kentucky wonder in taste. The bean is called a yard long bean.
