Manure for flowers
NEW YORK (AP) - “We use
zebra manure for striped tiger
lilies and elephant manure for
growing giant amaryllis lilies,”
says Bronx Botanical Gardens
horticulturist Robert Russo.
The gardens has been using
animal manure from the Bronx
Zoo for more than 20 years as a
fertilizer and estimates it has
cut compost and fertilizer bills
by nearly $50,000 a year.
But the zoo’s supply exceeds
the garden’s needs, so the zoo
may begin selling the stuff on
the open market.
