Page 26 Griffin Daily News Thursday ,August2s,l977 Misconceptions about the eye Though a Gallup poll indi cated Americans fear blind ness more than any disabili ty other than cancer, many people still have miscon ceptions about eye health and care According to the Ameri can Association of Ophthal mology, some common eye misconceptions are: • People who wear glasses should have them checked each year to see if a new prescription is needed True or False? Children who have a problem learning to read are likely to have an eye coordination problem and can be helped with special exercises. True or False? "All controlled studies have proven this notion Sitting too close to a tele vision set, reading in dim light, holding a book too close when reading, or wearing glasses which are too strong may per manently damage your eyes. True or False? "False," says Dr Lichter "The way light enters the eye is, to many people, a mysterious event. There fore, there is a belief that if light doesn't enter the eye properly something bad will happen Sitting too close to a television set, reading in dim light, holding a book too close, or wearing someone else's glasses, all evoke a GOODE NICHOLS Furniture Co. "Unfortunately, desper ate parents often waste many hundreds of dollars on such exercise pro grams when remedial reading and tutoring may be the best approach," he adds. feeling of danger in the public's view." "In fact," says Dr. Lichter, " the eye deals with light regardless of how it enters the eye. Whether the light is dim, or the rays are bent in one way or another the eye will still perform its function Nothing un healthy can result from this. Speaking of glasses which are 'too strong' is simply a misnomer What patients usually mean is that their glasses are un comfortable. This dis comfort may be annoy ing, but it will not cause harm to the eyes." Film award NEW YORK (AP) - Para mount Pictures has announced the presentation of the David di Donatello Award for best pro ducer of the year to Robert Evans, an American, for the film “Marathon Man.” The award was recently giv en to Evans at the Greek The ater in Taormina, Sicily. The awards were established in 1955 by the Italian Association of Producers and Distributors for International Films. Economy is going strong By NEA/London Economitt Newt Service WASHINGTON - (LENS) — The slide of the dollar on the foreign exchanges con tinues. But the fall has not par ticularly perturbed the Carter administration; floating rates are devised exactly for such adjustments and this is no precursor of a summer dollar crisis. The dollar’s fall is a reflec tion of the United States' trade deficit, estimated to be a record $25 billion this year. This is in large part due to the surprisingly healthy perfor mance of the domestic economy, while the rest of the world stagnates. Although the growth in the country’s GNP for the second quarter of the year has not yet been released, it is expected to match the 6.9 per cent an nual growth rate clocked up in the first quarter. This is con siderably faster than had been thought possible six months ago. Conventional opinion still has it that in the second half of the year the growth rate will slacken off markedly. There is little sign of that happening yet. In June the level of industrial output rose by 0.7 per cent, which was more than expected, and although much of this was the result of swelling inventories the fact that there was sub stantial growth in such basic industries as cars, iron and steel suggests that the slow down, which undoubtedly will come, is still some way off.
