Mohawks moving community MOSS LAKE, N.Y. (AP) - A band of Indians that seized hun dreds of acres of lush forest land in the Adirondacks is mov ing its community nail by nail after surviving three winters in handmade cabins and the hos tility of its white neighbors. The Indians —about 30 fami lies of the Mohawk tribe — are trying to be self-sufficient and live off the land. They lived in the cabins reportedly without electricity or plumbing. “What brings us here is that we don’t see any healthy future for our children if they remain in the reservation and in the urban areas. They will be set tling on an estimated 2,400 acres of public land with fishing and hunting rights on additional land. (AP) camping rights by establishing a model Indian village for pub lic viewing. But a spokesman for the group said they still are not giving up their original claim to almost 12.5 million acres of land in northern New York and Vermont. Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant sold the land to New York State in 1797 for SI,OOO. The Indians claim the purchase violated a 1794 treaty that prohibited sale of the land. They are part of the growing movement among Indians to force the government to honor treaties with their forefathers. In May 1974, the Mohawks took over an abandoned girls’ camp owned by the state near here to push recognition for their claim. Tensions ran high a few months after the Mohawks oc cupied the abandoned camp ground. Two whites were wounded by gunfire as they drove past the encampment. The Indians claimed they had been fired on first and refused to allow investigators onto their property. Since then, they have been living here in virtual seclusion. No white man is allowed on the settlement. The Mohawks have assumed traditional Indian names al though their dress consists mainly of T-shirts and jeans. They grow their own food and fish and hunt. Many gave up good jobs and homes, according to Kakwirakeron. Carter, Lance to meet WASHINGTON (AP) - Pres ident Carter is meeting with his embattled budget director, Bert Lance, for their first announced business session since Carter declared his longtime friend ex onerated of wrongdoing in his private financial dealings. A White House spokesman said the lunch meeting today in the Oval Office was a routine discussion of budget matters and the economy. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Jody Powell said Wednesday that neither the President nor any of his aides had tried to influence the office of the Comptroller of the Currency in a decision last No vember to lift restrictions against a Calhoun, Ga., bank formerly headed by Lance. Powell said a member of Carter’s transition team, John Moore, was involved in con sultations on the proposed pub lic disclosure of the decision, But the spokesman said the consultations were initiated on Dec. 1, more than a week after the Nov. 22 decision had been made. “At no time did John Moore or anyone else attempt to in fluence the comptroller on this matter,” Powell said. The restrictions had been im posed by the Comptroller of the Currency against the Calhoun National Bank of Calhoun, Ga., as part of an agreement in late 1975. The agreement provided that the bank, of which Lance was chairman, take steps to make certain that its officers be pre vented from overdrawing their accounts at the bank for politi cal purposes. The agreement with the comptroller’s office was termi nated on Nov. 22, just a few weeks after Carter was elected President. There have been suggestions this was done to keep the agreement from being made public when Carter ap pointed Lance director of the Office of Management and Budget. People Zeppo Marx CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (AP) - Zeppo Marx says he learned of the death of his brother Groucho on television and was snubbed from the family’s memorial service. “I turned on the TV the next day and there it was, he was gone,” said Zeppo, 76, the youngest and only survivor of the five brothers. He said he was not invited to a gathering Sunday at the home of Groucho’s son, Arthur, because he backed long time Groucho companion, Erin Fleming, in a recent court battle. Zeppo spoke at a news conference Tuesday. Groucho died Friday. “The thing is I stood up for this girl Fleming,” said Zeppo, who testified at a Los Angeles Superior Court hearing which ultimately removed Miss Fleming as the aging comedian’s guardian. Zeppo said the 37-year-old Miss Fleming extended his brother’s life by providing a stimulating influence. There was no immediate comment from Arthur Marx or Miss Fleming. Sonny and Cher LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Sonny and Cher comedy and music team has been sued for up to $350,000 by a Las Vegas hotel for allegedly failing to fulfill a stage show contract. The suit, filed Wednesday in federal court by the Sahara Hotel, claimed that Sonny and Cher had agreed in January 1973 to play three two-week engagements that year and another two-week engagement in 1974. However, the suit claimed the pair shortened an October 1973 engagement by four performances and canceled a one-week stand for the following month. ~ wk vk JE JPi MF \w\Ml -i I o I m Jin W ■tty ■ll |M|&.
