Groucho leaves bulk of estate to his sons SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Groucho Marx left his three children the bulk of his estate, estimated at between $2.5 mil lion and $6 million. He remem bered his longtime companion, Erin Fleming, with $150,000. The sole sentimental bequest in the comedian’s last will and testament, which was written in 1974, was leaving to Miss Fleming the “boutonniere of the Commander des Arts et Let tres,” an honor bestowed upon him by the French government. Groucho, who died Aug. 19 at the age of 86, made it clear that he wanted to prevent legal fights among heirs. (AP) - Vet erinarians are laboring to re pair the deformed hooves and legs of a Shetland pony confined for four years in a nailed-shut stall piled high with manure. “I’ve seen a lot, but that still shocked me,” said Peter Saun ders, an investigator for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), who examined the pony shortly after he was found two weeks ago in the town of Plaistow, near the Massachusetts border. “The pony’s hooves are enormous, about a foot and a half long and curved back until they almost touch his knees,” Saunders said. Public sympathy halts discipline SAN DIEGO (AP) - Public sympathy for two Navy enlisted women who were photographed shoeless at a Navy dress for mation apparently has per suaded the service to abandon plans to court martial the wom en. Photographs of the women standing at the rear of a forma tion of hundreds of North Island Naval Air Station sailors ap peared recently in a San Diego newspaper, leading to a Navy announcement Monday that the women were being placed on report for being out of uniform. Other Navy women standing under a hot sun at the lengthy change-of-command ceremony also had removed their high heel pumps, but since they were not in the photograph the Navy said it was unable to identify receive $25,000. The comedian left each of his four grand children $5,000. After the specific bequests, the remainder of Groucho’s for tune goes to his three children, Arthur, Miriam and Melinda. The deformity is called lami nitis, and some veterinarians said they had never seen such a severe and painful case. The pony’s legs were also damaged because of the distortion of the hooves. In addition, the pony had “hay belly,” a distension caused by a diet of all hay and no grain. “That pony must have one hell of a will to live,” said Saunders. King, a 10-year-old gold colored pony with a light mane, was found in a garage after an SPCA investigator received a tip that some type of animal was being kept in the building. “I couldn’t believe what I them. The names of the two it did identify have not been released. ■fl A PORTRAITS INW ■ 14 LIVING COLOR ■ f $1.95 zik. ■ deposit when PHOTOGRAPHED W- <*K * ■ 4uOI 5 9.95 v dB DELIVERY x-w. : j R*'' :.■■£."■ *'VJ A V/1 2-Bxlo tilßyla| Hgg 2-5X7 O IhH 010 WALLETS Os Vl •'. Bomb ATLANTA (AP) — A device found near the Plains Baptist Church was either a remote control bomb or an elaborate dummy bomb, the federal Bu reau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms reported. A package containing a blast ing cap and an unidentified powder was found in a flower bed by three women Wednes day. A spokesman said the powder still is being analyzed. saw,” said Plaistow Animal Control Officer Don Sargent. “I looked into a small window and saw a pony standing on top of a pile of manure as high as the window. “I can’t believe that anything could live in that filth. We pried the boards off the stall so we could get the pony out and the maggots and flies just swarmed out." The pony was owned by a woman named Barbara Reed, but police and the SPCA are re fusing to say where the woman lives or why she locked up the animal because of distress over the incident in the town of about 5,000 persons. They fear that publicity might prompt some “overzealous animal lover to take some rash action against the woman.” The SPCA now owns the pony. Mrs. Reed has been charged with cruelty to animals. In New Hampshire the charge is a mis demeanor which could result in a sentence of one year in jail, a SSOO fine or both. “We only go to court when we know we’ll win ... It was blatant cruelty,” Saunders said. Deaths Funerals Mr. Dix Mr. Zelma Stanley Dix of 926 New 10th street died early this morning at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
