HEALTH Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. I I Prefer low blood pressure By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. DEAR DR. LAMB - What should my blood pressure be? I am 51 years old. I have been taking Hygroton for a long time now. Are there any side effects? The doctor I go to seems to think I'll have to take it the rest of my life. DEAR READER - There is a common misconception that your blood pressure should be 100 plus your age. The truth is that if your blood pressure stays on the low side you will have a better chance for a long and healthy life. That means your blood pressure should be below 140 over 90 for the two readings, for optimal health. I am sending you The Health Letter number 1-8, Blood Pressure, to give you more information on what controls your blood pressure and what it means. Others who want this information can send 50 cents for it with a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope to P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019. • Hygroton is a diuretic that helps to flush out sodium from your body and with the sodium some water. This action helps to lower the blood pressure some in many individuals with moderately elevated blood pressure. The Health Letter I am send ing you explains that if you have any excess pounds of fat, elimination of it will often lower your blood pressure. Avoiding coffee, tea, and such stimulants plus avoiding obesity and getting regular exercise often go a long way toward controlling mildly elevated blood pressure. If that doesn’t do the job one of the mild diuretics often helps. When taken in moderate amounts and the person gets enough potassium, as from drinking a couple of glasses of orange juice a day, these medicines have few if any side effects. Is Larry Kert cut out for films? By Dick Kleiner HOLLYWOOD - (NEA) - Don’t make any jokes about the cutting room floor while Larry Kert is around. The en tire subject is too painful. Kert is an all-time Broadway star. He created the part of Tony in “West Side Story” and, over the years, has been in dozens of Broadway musicals, from “West Side Story” to the original production of “Com pany.” But the curious thing about Kert’s career is that he is a Los Angeles boy, who played in movies when he was a child. But he’s never had much success in films as a grown-up. He thought he had licked the jinx when he was given a major role in “New York, New York,” climaxed by a 13-minute production number with Liza Minnelli. But, if you’ve seen that spectacularly beautiful film, you will notice no 13-minute production number and, in fact, no Larry Kert. He’s lying somewhere out there, on the cutting room floor, and it’s a tough blow to swallow. “It was a spectacular number,” Kert says. “There were 40 singers and dancers and it was something I was very proud of. “I went to see the first cut of the film, which ran for more than four hours. And the number was in it, but at the very end of the picture. I had a feeling then that it would be cut and, actually, in away I’m elad it was. LAMB - Dur ing a recent medical examina tion everything checked out okay except for my “BUN” which was too high. The doc tor said it was only three points above the normal level and didn't seem too concerned about it. He said it has something to do with the kidney function but I didn't understand. He is a very busy man and I didn't push him further but I am still curious. Maybe you can explain it to me. DEAR READER - BUN merely stands for blood urea nitrogen. Urea is a compound the body forms of two ammo nia radicals. The ammonia radicals come from stripping them off the amino acids. The amino acids make up the pro tein you eat. Simply stated, if you eat a lot of protein you will have an increased amount of urea to eliminate through the kidneys. This is par ticularly true if your body doesn’t need a lot of extra pro tein as is usually the case in most normal adults. Most healthy adults eat far more protein than the body really requires. The common blood test measures the nitrogen in urea. When your kidneys are functioning well they will usually filter out any excess amount of urea that ac cumulates in the blood. However, if you happen not to have been drinking enough water, or have lost body water through sweating, or any number of factors the blood urea may be a high normal and it may have no important significance at all. Just im prove your daily water drink ing habit and forget about it. Because of the volume of mail Dr. Lamb cannot answer your letters personally but he will answer representative letters of general interest in his column. I NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN i the end like that. By the time that came on, the audience was getting very restless.” Last January, Kert came back home to Los Angeles to give movies one big push. He says he even sub-let his New York apartment, something he had never done before. The idea was to make Hollywood Kert-conscious and become a movie star, or at least a solid movie performer. And he should be, too. Kert, besides his singing ability, has always been a solid actor and his rugged good looks come over well on film. But that big push didn’t bear fruit, to mix a metaphor. And, in fact, he’d only been here a short while when he was back on stage. He starred in a revival of “Irma LaDouce” for Los Angeles’ Civic Light Opera. And now he’s going back to New York, to take over one of the roles in “Side By Side By Sondheim.” Then he’s already committed to a San Francisco engagement with “Irma LaDouce” and then another few months in New York in “Side By Side By Sondheim.” “But after that,” he says, “lam coming back here again and I am going to give movies and TV my best shot. At this point in my life, I really would like to make it out here on film. Maybe then I could set tle down for a while.” He’s never been able to set tle down, never married, no family.
