Toxic mold
Some Georgia com
may be dangerous
ATLANTA (AP) — A green
ish-yellow toxic mold plaguing
com crops in four Southeastern
states could be dangerous to
humans, agriculture officials
said Friday.
Alfatoxin, which is caused by
drought and insect damage,
showed up in nearly three out of
four samples in tests of 351 crop
samples taken from around
Georgia.
The toxin also has been found
in com crops in Florida, Ala
bama and South Carolina, offi
cials said.
State officials had said the
toxin was not harmful to hu
mans because food processing
removed the danger.
But while they acknowledged
that position Friday, federal of
ficials said much is unknown
about the toxin’s effects and
called it a “severe threat” to
human health.
“Alfatoxin has caused cir-

Dr. Joseph Rodricks, associate
director of the division of

“We assume the danger is

said. “We think it would take an

toxic reaction.”
However, he said, “The larg

Board of Regents approves
new desegregation plan
ATLANTA (AP) - A new de
segregation plan for Georgia
colleges and universities which
would increase the number of
black students by more than
10,000 was approved Friday by
the state Board of Regents.
Approval of the plan, which
includes a special committee to
monitor progress in deseg
regation, came after a 30-min
ute meeting of the regents.
The plan was drafted in re
sponse to guidelines from the
U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare, direct
ing Georgia and five other
states to speed up the deseg
regation process.
According to the plan, black
students will represent 20 per
cent of the total enrollment in
the Georgia university system
in 1982, compared with 15 per
cent now.
Numerically, that would rep
resent an increase from about
20,600 black students to about
31,000 black students in 1982.
During the same period, total
enrollment would rise from
about 126,000 to around 143,000.
The plan had been drafted by a
special board of regent com
mittee. Copies of the document
were mailed to all board mem
bers earlier this week, and final
approval came with little
discussion and no dissent.
Regent Milton Jones of Co
lumbus said one of the most
important features of the plan
was the provision for a special
board committee to continually
monitor the progress of deseg
regation.
Regent Elridge McMillan of
Atlanta, one of two black mem-
bers of the board, agreed with
Jones, saying, “A plan is no
better than the people who im
plement it ... I hope that the
