Interview with Marianne Black One of television’s new est stars is perky Mari anne Black of "Sugar Time!', a new series star ring Barbi Benton, Didi Carr, and Marianne Black as an aspiring three-girl rock group. Marianne has been a Krformer since she was jr years old and appeared with her dancing instructor mother in her home town of Cleveland, Ohio. 'As long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to be on stage - even when I was four," she says. T was mostly trained for ballet, but I didn’t have the ballet body: I’m short and I don’t have the long legs," adds Marianne, who has appeared with the Ak ron Ballet and has studied with Balanchine and Rob ert Jeffrey. Marianne turned her en ergies toward musical comedy when she was sev enteen. "In high school I auditioned for a commu nity musical and realized I could sing," she says. "I love ballet, but you couldn’t smile in ballet, not the way I wanted to smile." Marianne attended Ste vens College where she met her busband-to-be, John. After college, she joined the Kenley Players, where she sang "all leads," and appeared in "Guys and Dolls," "No, No Nanatte," "The Boyfriend," and 'Bus Stop." Marianne credits John with much of her current success. "When we first came out here (California),* she says, "he got a job in a bank and worked there a year and a half so I could pursue my career . . . because of the series he can quit the bank and pursue his own career now. He has an agent and is pretty excited... I have a wonderful husband. I don’t think many men would to that." Has she enjoyed working on the series? "Yes, very much so. I’m like a little child with her first doll or at her first dance ... very 0 _ MOVIE: Last Holiday* Believing he is dying a man takes a final holiday at resort where people assume he's im portant; after the error of diagnosis is discovered, a strange freak accident takes place changing a lot of lives. A look at the American Le gion's gambling opera tions Known as Monte Carlo Nights,' once a month, immediately af ter payday, roulette, dice, blackjack and poker games have prod uced a boom in the mem- excited ... I love the work and love working with the people. Didi is very talented and has a lovely voice, and Barbi is sweet and nice to work with and very intelligent. I’m kind of the baby of the group. They know a little more about the ins and ups of the ’biz’. They’re very nice girls and I say that with all honesty." About her future flans she says, "I love TV. would love to do films but I don’t know if I’m a film actress. I’m perky, I’m not the beautiful leading woman or ingenue type. I would love to have a club act built around me so I could sing and dance and do everything. I would like to do Broadway. If I build up a name on TV, that would make the other things possible." She con cluded, "I’d love to do it all." picture in, somebody at the agency I have now remem bered me ... I had been to 25 other agents before that." "They don’t care about stock out here, just TV and film credits," she says, adding that this is proba bly because "There is a transition to be made from stage to TV ... you have to be much broader on stage, everything is bigger, and you have to be loud . . . your takes must be big enough for an audience of 2500 to see them... I think it’s easier to go from stage to TV than from TV to stage. It’s easier to bring your motions down. I’m still adjusting. I play musi cal comedy sometimes, with my takes out to the audience or the camera instead of the other actors." About "Sugar Time!" Marianne says, "I feel like I’ve hardly paid my dues. I’ve only been out here a Kar and a half and here I ve a wonderful role on a TV series. I’m glad it’s happened so far and I hope it Keeps up." bership of Legion clubs overseas. 2.
