Page 2 — Griffin Daily News Saturday, August 27, 1977 Unemployment dips in Spalding Spalding County’s unem ployment rate declined by six tenths of a percentage point in July, from 6.1 in June to 5.5, according to figures released here today by the Georgia Department of Labor. The number of persons unemployed in Spalding County dipped by 119 from 1318 in June to 1199 in July. The total number of persons employed increased by 58, from 20374 in June to 20432 in July, according to Jerry Buffington, manager of the State Employment Security Agency’s Job Service Office here. During the same period, the county’s labor force decreased by 61, from 21692 in June to 21631 in July. The labor force is the total number of persons employed and unemployed. At the same time, the area served by the Griffin Job Service office of the State Employment Security Agency, of which Spalding is one of eight counties, saw its unemployment rate drop by two-tenths per cent over the month from 6.3 to 6.1. Chandler to dedicate First Baptist hymnals John R. Chandler, church music consultant, church music department, Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Nashville, will be guest of the First Baptist Church Sunday evening and will lead the church in the dedication of the new hymnals. The service will consist of instrumental, choral and congregational singing and will feature a panoramic trip through the new hymnals. Chandler, a native of Colorado, is a graduate of the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He also holds the M.S.M. degree from South western Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth. Chandler has served as supervisor of the field services section in the church music department, Before coming to the board as a consultant in church music administration, Chandler was minister of music at First Baptist Church, Bir mingham, and has served in similar positions at Olivet Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, and Trinity Baptist Church, San Antonio. TUESDAY- Western beef Lightning scores near-miss The James Cokers, who live in Carey’s Mobile Home Park on Minter road, experienced a near-miss last night when lightning struck a tree near their trailer. It was around 11:30 during a thunderstorm which rolled through Griffin. “The lightning stripped the bark from the top of the tree to the ground,” said Mrs. Coker. “It knocked a basketball goal off the tree and also knocked our power out.” Mrs. Coker said the electric blast burned all the fuses in the fuse box of the trailer. “It’s a good example of where not to be (under a tree) during a thunderstorm,” she added. Slaying suspect recaptured in N.Y. NEW ROCHELLE, N. Y. (AP) — A 21-year-old escapee from Georgia, accused of killing a 19-year-old convenience store clerk last December, has been arrested in the Bronx, the FBI said today. Roosevelt Green Jr. and an other man were arrested in a camper which had been report ed stolen Friday at the scene of an attack on a New Jersey state trooper, the FBI said. The second man was not identified immediately. The two men were captured by FBI agents without incident, although both were armed, an FBI agent said. Green, 21, of Conway, S. C., escaped the Monroe County, Ga., jail last Feb. 5. He was charged with murder, kidnap, rape, armed robbery and auto theft, officers said. Mr. Holcombe was a native of Athens and the son of the late J. T. Holcombe and the late Katherine Lee Holcombe. He had made his home in Griffin for the last 57 years. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church and was in volved in law enforcement activities since 1942. He is best known for his work founding the school safety patrol in the Griffin and Spalding County schools. At the time of his death, he was working as a security officer for the Griffin-Spalding County Schools. He was a graduate of the 48th Session of the FBI National Academy in Washington, D. C. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U. S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific and in Northern China. Mr. Holcombe is survived by his wife, Irma Rhodes Holcombe of Griffin; a son, Barry Holcombe of Tulsa, Okla.; 4 sisters, Mrs. Allene Crowe, Mrs. Grace Gill, Mrs. Mamie Huff, all of Griffin and Mrs. Annie Mae Carr of Athens. Three grandchildren and 7 nieces and nephews also are survivors. Funeral services for Mr. Holcombe will be conducted Sunday from the chapel of Pittman Rawls Funeral Home in Griffin. The Rev. Billy Southerland and the Rev. Hartwell E. Kennedy will of ficiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery.. Mrs. Martin Mrs. Dellie Belvin Ousley Martin of 214 West Central avenue died Friday afternoon at the Griffin-Spalding County Hospital. Mrs. Martin was bom in Monroe County and lived in Griffin most of her life. She was a member of the Carver Road Baptist Tabernacle and was a retired employee of Thomaston Mills. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Reba Moore of Griffin; 2 sons, John D. Rick man of San Antonio, Texas and Audrey H. Rickman of Griffin; 2 stepdaughters, Mrs. Mamie Dell Vaughn of Starksville, Miss, and Mrs. Ruby Heath from Gay; one stepson, Grover L. Martin of Morrow; 17 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Martin will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. from the Carver Road Baptist Tabernacle. The Rev. W. R. Bob Jones and the Rev. Graydon Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Moore, 127 LaPrade road and McDonald Chapel from 7-9 p.m. tonight. McDonald Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Thomas Mrs. Ruby Lee Thomas of 414 Adams street in Griffin died Friday afternoon at the Griffin- Spalding County Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Willie Thomas; 2 sisters, Mrs. Georgia Finkfield and Mrs. Bessie Weston, both of Belle Glade, Fla.; one brother, Lee Weston of Thomaston and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be an nounced later by Miller’s Funeral Home of Griffin. What ’.s happening Guest speaker The Emmanuel Tabernacle Holiness Church will host a guest speaker from Cartersville at its Sunday morning service. The church is located on North Hill street extension. Homecoming The Rev. Cecil Norton, pastor of the Phillippi Baptist Church in Locust Grove and interim pastor of the West College Street Baptist Church, will be guest minister at homecoming services on Sunday at the West College Street Baptist Church. The goal is set at 450 pints and donating hours will be from noon until 5:30 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church. The Griffin-Spalding Hospital has made 2,681 crossmatches so far this year and 1,036 pints of blood have been transfused. Members of the Auxiliary will have home-baked cakes and cookies as refreshments for donors. Rev. Land DeVotie launches Outreach DeVotie Baptist Church will conduct an outreach program known as “Action” on August 28 and continue through Sep tember. The program was devised by the Riverside Baptist Church in Fort Myers, Fla., and has been used extensively throughout the United States and several foreign countries. “Action” will be directed by Frank E. Land of Fort Myers and the pastor, the Rev. J. Ray Allen. The program calls for a task force of church members canvassing the community inviting people to enroll in Bible study. The survey will be conducted Sunday afternoon and throughout the following week.
