The September meeting of the Griffin
Woman’s Club will be held Thursday at
3 p.m. in the meeting room of the Flint
River Regional Library. Members are
reminded to bring their gifts for the
Ronald McDonald house.

The Spalding County BPW Club will
meet Thursday at noon at Holiday Inn.
Steak supper
The Midway United Methodist
Church will sponsor a steak supper
Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Deaths-Funerals
Mrs. Wilkerson
Mrs. Mary Alberta Wilker
son, 79, of Thomaston, formerly
of Concord, died early Tuesday
morning.
She is survived by 2
daughters, Mrs. Gerald Oxford
of Rome and Mrs. Gerald
Marshall of Thomaston; a son,
George Wilkerson of
Lawrenceville.
The funeral was this af
ternoon at 2 o’clock in the
Silvertown Baptist Church in
Thomaston. Coggins Funeral
Home of Thomaston was in
charge of plans.
Mr. Coggins
Mr. Tommy Lee Coggins of
Columbus, Ohio died Sunday
night in Columbus.
Mr. Coggins was a former
resident of Griffin.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Emma Reeves Coggins; 2
daughters, Miss Yvonne
Coggins and Miss Brenda
Coggins, both of Columbus; 2
brothers, Lewis Coggins of
Griffin and Floyd Coggins of
Boston, Mass.; 3 sisters, Mrs.
Mattie Prothro of Atlanta, Mrs.
Carrie Willis of Boston, Mass.;
and Mrs. Gladys Middlebrooks
of Atlanta; several nieces and
nephews.
The funeral will be in
Columbus.

Mrs. Maudie Lee Lassiter
Powell Knight, 77, wife of Jake
Jacobs Knight of Barnesville,
died at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital Tuesday night where
she had been, a patient for 2
days.
Mrs. Knight was bom in
Pulaski County, Ga., and had
lived in Hawkinsville for many
years before moving to Bar
nesville 32 years ago.
She is survived by her
husband; 3 sons, Earnest
Powell, Oswell Powell, both of
Hawkinsville, Ralph Powell of
Barnesville; 3 daughters, Mrs.
George Underwood, Mrs.
Eugene Teal and Mrs. Robert
Garrett, all of Barnesville; 2
stepdaughters, Mrs. Louise
Dardeen of Cincinnati, Ohio and
Mrs. Katherine Clark of
Orlando, Fla.; 5 stepsons, John
F. Knight of Albany, Don
Knight of Abbeville, Jim Knight
of Douglas, John Knight of
Dublin and Nick Knight of
Canton; 17 grandchildren, 20
great-grandchildren; 3 sisters,
Mrs. Rennie Sarr of Lexington,
Neb., Mrs. Lucy Perry of
Jonesboro and Mrs. Johnnie
Melton of Barnesville; a
brother, Samuel Lassiter of
Barnesville.
The funeral will be Thursday
afternoon at 3 o’clock in the
First Pentecostal Holiness
Church in Barnesville. The Rev.
Keith Hearn and the Rev. Earl
Smith will officiate and burial
will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Friends may visit the family at
the home of Mr. and Mrs.
George Underwood, 202
Carleeta street, Barnesville.
Haisten Funeral Home of
Barnesville is in charge of
plans.
Man charged
with murder
A murder warrant has been
taken against Edward Davis,
Jr., 28, of Sunny Side, charging
him with the shotting death of
Lorenzo Ethridge, 21, also of
Sunny Side.
The warrant was taken
Tuesday by Ethridge’s family.
Ethridge died Monday night
at Davis’ home lawmen said.

Sen. Virginia Shapard’s blue comfort
went to Joe Clark for a $26 high bid.
And a bronze seal on Georgia marble
from Sen. Sam Nunn sold for $6.
Door prizes were won by City
Commissioner Dick Mullins and Shirley
Beeland. Mrs. Miller also was
presented with a gift.
Nora Mostiler’s song and picture
presentation was the evening’s
highlight to many.
She sang verses dedicated to
politicians as their pictures flashed on a
screen.
“Did You Ever See A Dream
Walking” was sung to her husband,
Rep. John Mostiler; “You Must Have
Been A Beautiful Baby” to Rep. John
Carlisle; “Ain’t She Sweet”, Sen.
Virginia Shapard; “Country Roads”,
Lt. Gov. Zell Miller; “When You Walk
Through A Storm”, Rep. Jack Flynt
3 escapees captured in Kentucky
CARNESVILLE, Ga. (AP) -
Three escapees from the
Franklin County, Ga., jail re
captured Tuesday in Kentucky
will be extradited to Georgia in
two weeks, authorities said.
The three men were unarmed
and offered no resistance when
Lexington, Ky., police picked
them up, said Franklin County
Sheriff Clifford Royston.

Democrats, who presently serves on
the state party staff, along with Carol
Dabbs, who also attended.
Other out of towners were District
Attorney Johnny Caldwell, Jr. from
Thomaston; Sen. Peter Banks from
Barnesville; Dr. Tom Cotton,
Thomaston, chairman of the Upson
County Democratic Committee; and 4
members of Mr. Flynt’s staff from
Washington D. C. and his South Fulton
office.
The Rev. Lamar Cherry, pastor of the
First United Methodist Church, opened
and closed the program with prayers.
Mrs. Norma Taylor, chairman,
presided and Miller was introduced by
A. E. Mitchell. Mrs. Gene Pickett,
pianist, presented special dinner
music. Dick Hyatt led the pledge to the
flag.
The three were identified as
Thomas Eugene Holly, 29, of
Lavonia, Ga.; Douglas Lee Ev
ersole, 27, of Georgetown, Ky.,
and Terry Wayne Marcus, 18, of
Lexington, Ky.
Eversole and Marcus were
being held pending pretrial
hearings on armed robbery
charges and Holly was awaiting
trial on kidnaping charges when
they escaped Monday, Royston
said.
The sheriff said he has no idea
how the three escaped from the
jail, adding “there were no
broken windows or anything.”
On the night of the escape,
Royston said, he had a few ex
tra prisoners in the jail, which
has space for only 12 persons.
