Vet needs big help
ABILENE, Tex. (AP) - Vet
erinarian Fred Blackwell is
looking for a brave soul to help
him X-ray Penny 11, an 8,000-
pound elephant that fell into a
dry moat and injured a leg.
Penny fell into an eight-foot
deep moat in front of her cage
last week, injuring her right
hind leg. Firemen had to fill the
moat with water and float
Penny to the top to get her out.
In order to X-ray the ele
phant, a procedure he described
as “very dangerous,” someone
would have to get under the
elephant and hold a metal plate
against her leg while the X-ray
was shot, he said.
So far, there have been no
volunteers.

15 days instruction
Jeff Cook solos at age 14
BY QUIMBY MELTON HI
Jeff Cook has accomplished a
remarkable feat.
He has soloed a glider plane
at the young age of 14 yean old.
Most folks would not go up in
a glider plane if they were 114.
But, Jeff did it on a sunny day
in August, in Eagleville, Ten
nessee..
Another remarkable thing
about Jeff’s solo effort, is that it
took him only 15 days to learn
how to fly the glider.
“I began instruction with my
first flight on August 10. By
August 25,1 was ready to solo,”
remarked the pilot.
Some of the folks who come to
Eagleville have been taking
instructions for years, and they
still have not soloed.
NORTH FAYETTE
Jeff is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Sid Cook of Dix-Lee’on sub
division in North Fayette
County.
His father, Sid, is a pilot with
Southern Airlines. He pilots a
DC9. He also flies hot air
balloons.
Both parents went to
Eagleville to watch their son
solo in the glider.
What Jeff has is a student
glider license. “You take
lessons until you get
proficient,” father Sid beamed.
“Jeff keeps a regular log and
keeps trade of his flying time.”
One of the ironic things about
the whole matter, is that Jeff
will not be able to get a learners
driving license until next year,
when he is 15. He is able
however, to go 3,000 feet up in
the air and sail a glider to a safe
landing
“Gliders take more coor
dination than a power plane,”
says Sid Cook.
A couple of spots for glide
plane activity is Eagleville and
nearby Williamson, Georgia.
“You try to find a place away
from the power plane traffic
patterns” notes Jeff. “In a
glider you must also stay above
the trees. It is better to find a lot
of farm country, that is the best
area for gliding.”
HOW IT GETS UP
A glider pilot readies the
altitude they want by hooking
onto a power plane, which gets
them alrbom.
There is a knob inside the
glider which you pull that will
release the hookup and send the
glider on its own.
Jeff sailed 500 feet up in the
air on his solo feet, but he has
gone on as high as 3,000 feet up.
The higher up you go the
longer your glide. You must
also be constantly aware of the
air pockets and thermal con
ditions around you while flying
a glider.
You have a control stick and
rudders in the plane to aid your
flight. There is also a nose pad
and spoilers on the plane for the
landing
Jeff noted that it was “really
exciting to hear the wind rush
FAYETTEVILLE, Ga.
by ” as he pilots a glider.
APPROACH IMPORTANT
When the glider lands, the
approach is the most important
part. Jeff said that you must
carefully alllgn the glider or
else you will have a bad landing.
Remember, you don’t have any
power to correct any bad ap
proach. You even have to speed
up in a glider to land.
Jeff noted that he was already
interested in “planes and stuff”
before he soloed.
He says that being a pilot for a
career is “in my mind.”
Asked if he was nervous
during the solo attempt, Jeff
said, “Yes, I was a little at first.
But once I got going, it was ok.”
Jeff’s father bragged on the
words of Jeff’s instructor. “The
instructor said that Jeff doesn’t
have any trouble with con
fidence, at all.”
After the solo flight, Jeff took
his father up for a ride. Asked if
he plans to glide once school
begins, Jeff responds quickly,
“Sure, I want to build up my
time.”
Jeff wants to solo in a power
plane as soon as be can. That
will have to be when he is 16,
and he plans to do that for his
birthday celebration.
The young pilot will be
practicing out of both the
Eagleville and Williamson.
Jeff is a young man who may
have his bead in the clouds, but
be certainly knows where he is
going.
