Three scuba divers using only their hands and nets went fishing for a day and caught 150 fish, including the above-mentioned fish, two 70-pound nurse sharks and a pair of giant moray eels. The Shedd Aquarium is renovating its $1.2 million, 90,000-gallon coral reef tank, and the fish had to be transferred to holding tanks while the renovation work is un derway. (AP) ‘Chicken Wild’ takes championship BROOKINGS, Ore. (AP) - A speedy banty rooster named “Chicken Wild” blitzed nearly 100 other feathered foes to win the 3rd annual world chicken race championship. Cheered on by 2,000 specta tors, the triumphant clucker clocked 18.6 seconds on the 100- foot course race, which is liber ally sprinkled with chicken feed to add to the suspense. The chickens are thrown into the air at the blast of the start er’s pistol and chased to the finish line by owners who some times look like chickens with their heads cut off. Dennis Coit, race chairman, said chicken racing is an art that has evolved two definite schools of thought. One is that chickens run best when loved, respected and treated as equals. Health State officials after expansion control ATLANTA (AP) — State offi cials say they plan to seek an amendment to the Georgia Con stitution to give state agencies the power to control expansion of private health care facilities in order to comply with a new federal law. The action is necessary to put Georgia in full compliance with the federal National Health Planning and Resources Devel opment Act, Douglas Skelton, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Human Re sources, said- The state has until October 1980 to comply with that act, which was designed to cut the soaring cost of health care. Unnecessary expansion of any hospital adds to the overall cost of health care, Skelton said. “If the use is not there, the patient gets socked for the cost,” he said. “If there are empty beds, somebody has to pay for them.” Gov. George Busbee, state Comp. Gen. Johnnie Caldwell and Asst. Atty. Gen. Michael Bowers met with Skelton Tues day to discuss compliance with the federal law. After the meeting, Skelton said state officials decided to AUCTION SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10,10:00 A.M. 175 ACRES • JACKSON, GA. The legislature must approve Thomaston opens pond to elderly The City of Thomaston opened its catfish pond on U.S. 19 North to the retired elderly last week. The pond was lined with elderly people with buckets of crickets and worms, lawn chairs and fishing poles all afternoon. Some say there were more anglers than fish to catch. The pond was originally a reservior for Thomaston Mills’ Peerless Division plant. Martha Mills brought the pond and turned it over to the city for the elderly to use for recreation. The pond was opened for the ninth consecutive year last Thursday and will be open each Thursday at 3 p.m. to retired people until cold weather makes fishing uncomfortable. a proposed amendment in its next session and the amend ment must reach the voters in the general election of 1978 in order to meet the 1980 deadline. If the amendment is ap proved, the General Assembly then must enact legislation giv ing state agencies powers to is sue a “certificate of need” be fore any health care system ex pansion is approved, Skelton said. Those agencies include the seven regional health system planning agencies and the state Health Planning and Develop ment Agency, all of which must comply with the federal act.
