Observers are divided on whether the move represents a “normalization” of South African sports or a concession to the international sports community, from which South Africa is isolated because of its racially separatist policies. (AP) - Three Georgia football players will miss Saturday’s Clemson con test, including center Matt Braswell, Coach Vince Dooley of the 17th ranked Bulldogs an nounced Wednesday. Dooley said Braswell, a soph omore from Americus, whose injury in Tuesday’s practice was diagnosed as cartilage damage, will be replaced by starting guard Jim Milo. Sophomore Ashley Madray will replace Milo at quick guard. Dooley also said two reserves, safety Jeff Hipp and running back Greg Bell, will miss Saturday’s contest. Hipp is suffering from locked cartilage in his knee and Bell has a sprained knee. “Offensively, I’m very con cerned about the status of Braswell, who looks doubtful for Saturday’s game,” Dooley said. “As I look at our offensive line, Bears 9 offense may explode in Covington 28 points in its first 2 games. What’s wrong with that? They won ’em both, didn’t they? Yours truly, the greatest foot ball expert of them all, can assure fans the talent is there and it’s only a matter of time before it explodes, sending Griffin’s scores zooming. despite the fact that we have quality at some positions, it has to be the weakest overall and in the most critical situation I’ve ever had in an offensive line since I’ve been in football.” Falcons romp over Packers Play opened Wednesday afternoon in the Griffin- Spalding County Recreation Department’s Senior Football League with the Falcons rolling to a 49-0 victory over the Packers and the Colts edging the Bucs, 6-0. Stacy Driver led the Falcons’ scoring with 4 touchdowns. Dietrich Reid scored 3. Andrew Holmes scored 4 extra points and Jeffrey Henley scored 1. Amos Williams scored a safety. A first quarter touchdown by Otis Morris gave the Colts the margin they needed to defeat the Bucs. Just between us experts, the point explosion will occur Friday night in Covington. Griffin will use the Newton game to notify LaGrange, Forest Park, Jonesboro, Newnan and R. E. Lee, the Bears’ next 5 foes, that it doesn’t pay to challenge the champions. Before getting deep into the Griffin-Newton prediction, let’s review last Friday’s game. Griffin defeated a stubborn Rockdale outfit, 14-0. It could have been much worst. Griffin missed several chances to blow the game wide open in the first half, which was played inside Rockdale territory. Coaches discovered a few offensive problems while watching game films. Faces Americus Perry will have to stretch its ‘Rubber Band Defense 9 By BARBARA WASHINGTON AP Prep Editor Perry’s “Rubber Band Defense” will have to stretch far enough to contain a revitalized Americus passing attack Friday night as the two teams meet in a crucial region 3AA Georgia high school football game. “Our defense bends, but it doesn’t break,” explained Perry Coach Bob Morrow, whose Panthers are 3-0 for the season. “We give folks a little yardage, but the closer they get to the goal line, the tougher we make it to score,” he added. “Somewhere along the way, most offenses will break —a fumble, penalty or interception.” Americus, also the Panthers, is 2-0 for the year and is ranked No. 1 in Class AA this week in an Associated Press poll. “We’ve got a good throwing attack this year, with the strong arm of (junior quarterback) Tim McPherson, and we’re fortunate enough to have good receivers,” said Americus Coach Alton Shell. Those receivers include Emanuel King, who returned a punt 94 yards and caught a 42-yard pass, both for touch downs, against Irwin County in a 30-6 Panther victory. The Americus ground game is led by halfback Daniel Colwell, who carried the ball 15 times for 72 yards in the Irwin game. Quarterback Quentin Harvey, tailback John Ridley and fullback Sam Kendrick are the nucleus of the Perry of fense. Between them, Ridley and Kendrick have gained 676 yards rushing and scored 11 touchdowns this year. Morrow’s “Rubber Band Defense” features Mark Montgomery at end, tackle George Holmes, comerback Lynn Smith and safety Alvin Boone, who intercepted five passes last year. The Americus defense, traditionally tough, is led by Walter Gibson, Doug Parrish, Greg Parrish and Charles Leverette, who recovered a fumble and scored a safety in the Irwin game. “I think we’ve got to win this game to really be in the running this year,” said Shell. In other top games this weekend, Wayne County hosts Benedictine, Kendrick takes on Warner Robins, Moultrie is at Lowndes, R. E. Lee is at LaGrange, Cedar Shoals is at Gainesville, Ware County is at Appling county, Dodge County is at Swainsboro, Dublin is at Johnson County, Woodward Academy visits Westminster, Dalton hosts Calhoun, Irwin County is at Vidalia, Brookstone is at Hoganville and Vienna hosts Pelham. The 01’ Boy Himself problems were solved in practice. The Bears now have their offensive act together. It will be on display for the first time in Covington. My super scouts report Newton County has a fair football team. The Rams fell to Richmond Academy and R. E. Lee. That’s nothing to be ashamed of. Rich mond and Lee are 2 of the highest rated teams in Georgia. Newton proved it can score by putting 21 points on the board against Richmond. Griffin’s defense, which has allowed only 7 points in 2 games, will be tested in Covington. According to my informants, Griffin will pass that test. Offensively, Griffin will use its passing game for the first time. Combine that with one of the best ground attacks in Georgia and you have the makings of an excellent offensive show. The miniature computer proves my point. It won’t be close. Griffin will defeat Newton 35 to 7. Wayne County will have a tough (AAA) opponent against which to make a comeback in ninth-ranked Benedictine, which shut out Glynn Academy 194) and bombed Beach Last week 49-8. Wayne suffered a 36-14 season-opening loss to Statesboro last week. Wayne’s Yellow Jackets had only four offensive starters and defensive starters retiring from the 1976 squad, but Coach John Donaldson feels he has a good nucleus in split end Linday Scott, one of the top receivers in the state last year, fullback C. J. Tillman and tailback Larry Smith. Benedictine will counter with quarterback Randy Lanier, halfback Chris McCarthy, fullback Mario de LaGuardia and halfback Steve Kelly, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a junior last year. “If we could beat Benedictine this week, we could go on to take the region,” said Donaldson. In other key high school games in Georgia this weekend, Dougherty takes on crosstown rival Albany, Bainbridge is at Valdosta, Butler visits Central Macon, Campbell of Smyrna hosts Wheeler, Griffin is at Newton County, Georgia Military College hosts Fayette County, Charlton County is at Clinch County, West Point is at Manchester, Putnam County hosts Mary Persons, Commerce is at North Gwinnett and Red Bud is at Gilmer. Pike coach hoping for offensive show Pike County Coach Bobby Floyd is hoping to see another offensive show from his team against Tri-County Friday night in the Pirates first home game of the 1977. The Pirates put on a good offensive show in the first game of the season against Stock bridge with two of the running backs, Perry Burden and Cliff Davis, gaining more than 100 yards each. The Pirate offensive machinery sputtered last week in the game with Manchester. Burden and Davis were held to short gaines as was quar terback Andy Cooper. The Pirates were defeated in their first two games and Coach Floyd hopes his team can break into the win column this week. “We would very much like to see our team post a victory over Tri-County Friday night. They have a tough team, but we have had a good practice this week and I believe we are ready for them,” Coach Floyd said. Floyd said Tri-County is 3-0 so far and has a quarterback who passes the ball well and a good running back. Tri-County uses a power offense, he said. tals of 72 goals and 117 assists. The Flames also announced Wednesday that defenseman Ab DeMarco, a free agent acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings for Randy Manery, has been invited to training camp on a tryout basis. Training camp opens Sept. 19 in Smyrna, Ga. “We stopped ourselves in the game with Manchester last week and we are not going to let that happen this week,” Floyd said. Two changes were made in the Pirate lineup this week. David Kiblinger has replaced Johnny Foster at defensive end. Foster suffered an injured knee in the game with Manchester last week. Stanley Moses has been moved from the front defensive line to linebacker. “We believe Moses will provide us with some speed we need at the position,” Floyd said. Atlanta Doctors helping save franchises ATLANTA (AP) — Doctors on television catch crooks, save marriages and rebuild lives, in addition to healing their patients. Doctors in Atlanta are being asked to help save two of the city’s sports franchises. Andy Messersmith, the first of the big-contract, free agent baseball players, who was signed by the Atlanta Braves for a reported $1 million dollar contract to help the Braves chase a pennant, is in Piedmont hospital recovering from surgery on his pitching elbow. Steve Bartkowski, the No. 1 pick in the 1975 National Football League draft, who was supposed to quarterback the Atlanta Falcons into a title contender, is in the same hospital, recovering from knee surgery. The Falcons expect Bartkowski back this year — but the prognosis isn’t that good for Messersmith. “He won’t have a real good year next season,” said Dr. Robert Wells, who removed bone chips and spurs from Messersmith’s elbow and also repaired a ligament on the inside of the joint. “The usual procedure after an operation of this nature for a pitcher is that the following year is not very bright,” Wells said. “But I do expect him to have a degree of success in the long term. I think he will return to suc cessful National League pitching.” He said Messersmith’s arm will remain in a cast for four weeks, then he will exercises to loosen it. But it will be January “at the earliest” before he throws a baseball again, Wells said. At first it was thought that Bartkowski’s knee injury was a recurrence of the one which he suffered last season when he missed nine games. “It wasn’t,” said Dr. James Funk, team physician. “He first did it in the Tampa game and that is when we thought it was a recurrence of last year’s injury. He hurt it again in the Boston game. This time, though, there was pain and bleeding. He had a start of a (cartilage) tear in practice that week.” “It’s like tearing a piece of paper,” Funk said. “If someone starts tearing at one end and someone else starts from the other end, pretty soon it gives way.” RACES Senoia Raceway SAT. Our team has gained a lot of ex perience in the first two games and that will be a big help in the game against Tri-County,” Floyd said. The Pirates suffered a 35-6 defeat at the hands of Stock bridge in their season opener and were stopped 27-0 by Manchester last week. “We received a good effort from our players in practice this week and I hope the dif ference will show in the game Friday night,” Coach Floyd said.
