Newspaper reading educational (Thirteenth in a series) By Robert Cochnar and Judith Hines Certainly a newspaper is written to be read, but this should not suggest that preverbal children can't enjoy the daily paper, with your help. As a matter of fact, studies by early education specialists across the nation reveal that young children who do not get a sound base for learning before they enter the first grade often have trouble in later years. One daily activity, which parents can happily share with their children, is reading the comics aloud. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Nancy, Priscilla, and Bugs Bunny are all recognizable comic characters which delight children. Give your child every oppor tunity to play with the paper (after you’ve read it, of course). A young child (three or four years old) needs many opportunities to engage in motor activities. Motor skills developed by doing these activities con tribute to later writing skills, eye-hand coordination, left to right eye tracking, etc. The only thing to keep in mind is the development of the child and making sure that the ac tivity does not exceed the ability or skill of the child. — Use the stock market pages as drawing paper (good because of the smallness and lightness of the type). With a magic marker, children can scribble to their heart’s content. Your child will notice that while you read the paper, she can have some fun with it. And, when she’s older, she’ll want to read it — just like you. — Ask the child to cut out pictures of food (from the food ad pages in the newspaper) he likes to eat. Ask the child to select pic tures of foods she would eat for breakfast, lunch, a snack, etc. Ask the child to tell how the various foods taste. As a follow-up activity, ask the children to match pictures with the actual foods. — Look through the newspaper for pictures with the children and ask the child to explain the action in the picture, helping him or her to use appropriate terms. Then: ask the child to dramatize the picture. — Look through the newspaper with the child to find a large picture that would make a good puzzle. The parent should discuss with the child what the child sees in the picture. Help the child cut the picture out and glue it on card board. Clear contact paper should be placed over the pic- Give your child every opportunity to play with the paper (after you’ve read it, of course). ture before it is cut into several pieces. The contact paper will protect the picture and increase the usefulness of the puzzle. The child can put the puzzle- together, with assistance as needed. Most children like working with numbers. It’s important that the parent retain this positive attitude by making number activities fun. When a child becomes inattentive or bored, the parent should either stop or try another ac tivity. Concrete experiences in number situations are necessary if the child is to have any real understanding of math and benefit from later math experiences. — Cut two or three dozen numbers from 1 to 10 out of the newspaper. Have your child place all the same numbers in one pile. For an older child, write numbers from 1 to 10 across ten columns on a large sheet of paper. The child can cut out numbers to match and paste them to the large sheet in the correct column. — If your child has learned to add and subtract, let her pretend she has $20.00 to spend. Looking through the advertisements in the newspaper, let her figure out what she can buy with the “money.” This can be turned into a game with several players as each child tries to be first to finish a shopping list that will use up as much of his or her “money” as possi ble without going over the pretended total.
